Not an O-mistake (they're far too common and mundane) but had an interesting reindeer experience in Norway a couple of years ago. It was during my solo tour du Norge whilst cycling along a particular deserted mountainous stretch of road, when I spotted a herd of reindeer on the plateau to my left. Wow, that's awesome, must be like 40 of them. Awesome. Not one to miss out on a photo opportunity, I grabbed my camera and frantically removed the wide angle lens so that I could fix the telephoto lens to it. Too late, they'd seen me and bolted. B******s... I couldn't see them either cos the land was undulating, but was well over 1000m (above sea level), and so above the tree line. Can't have got far... I'll dump the bike by the side of the road and hunt them down, no worries, that's what this phat 200mm lens is for anyway. No sign... Come on yer blighters, where are yer... Getting further and further from the road (not that there's any traffic on it like, proper deserted), where are yer. Oh b******s again. There they are, miles away, and running fast away from me. Quick get a shot... Nope, disappeared behind a rise again. Sod it, I'll just have to wait to they go over another rise, then I'll get a nice shot as they're standing on top it. They're getting pretty far away tho, gonna be a crap picture unless I start running towards them. Right then, let's go... After a couple of minutes running I still haven't seen them again, that's it they must be miles away. Blew it, gutted... But not so! Holy ****! Sure enough they appear over the top of a rise, brilliant, and they're MUCH closer than they were when I last saw them. How'd they manage that?! Who cares, take some pics. 1...2...3... They're gonna be great, especially that last head on shot, they're flying... towards me... Ok, we've got a herd of reindeer running towards. They're prob about 500m away. They've got big antlers. Very big antlers. Are they friendly? Do you think the might just be inquisitive? Imagine that, a herd like that coming to say hi to you. Maybe they're cross cos I've run onto their patch and started chasing them. I'd love to stand he and find out. Oh ****, getting trampled by a herd of reindeer in the middle of nowhere ain't no way to go... RRRRUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!! Jeez, they're getting closer, they're not properly gallopping tho, they're not stopping tho, keep going, don't drop your camera, keep running... Great nearly at the road, maybe they're gonna stop, look round, no they're not... Oh well, grab the bike and get pedalling! As I grab the bike the stop, about 50m away. All standing in a line, we're staring at each other. My heart's pumping like a beast, never had an adrenaline rush like it. Wonder what they're thinking... they've never seen a fully laden bike that's for sure! Eventually a car comes, and they back of the road. I've never been as scared or excited in my life tho. Totally alone, just me and a herd of wild animals running towards me. What would've happpened if I'd stood my ground? Any reindeer experts out there?! I was buzzing for the rest of the trip after that, oh yeah, and I got my pictures!
