All GB cyclists qualify for the long final!
Results aren't on the net yet so I can't give many details but Andy C had the best race today after problems on Saturday. He qualified in 38th. Andy S was next in 45th with the other four men within 90s. There was an epic 8km leg where many took the wrong route and lost time. Killian and Steve both lost time after Killian broke a gear cable near the end and Steve, who is looking a bit wounded, came off his bike. However they are all looking forward to the final tomorrow (tonight). No news of how Charlotte got on but the qualification was a mere formality for the women who all qualified.

MTBO Worlds
Gary T here..
The best news is that we all got to the start line of the long final (105 minutes predicted for the winner) after qualifying. But I can't report incredible medal news - far from it - these guys out here are fast man! Although we did have Paul Trott sitting in 4th for a while. But, as the faster riders/orienteers go last this didn't last for long unfortunately.
Paul was best on this day, closely followed by Andy Conn, and a little ways back Steve Heading. These are our strongest (physical) cyclists and they've really tuned their map reading through the training week to post good positions today (see below). The 'orienteers' (Andy S, Killian and Gary) came in a little later with Gary moving like a slug (in the wrong direction) coming in much later - no excuses from me.
GBR's placings were;
34th Paul T
35th Andy C
43rd Steve
49th Andy S
51st Killian
58th Gary
Women; Charlotte SC in 33rd, much improved from the qualifier.
The GOLD went to Alain Berger, SILVER to Mika Tervela (last years World Champ), bronze to Adrian Jackson
In the womens, GOLD to Anke Dannowski, SILVER to Paivi Timmola, BRONZE to Antje Bornhak (multiple World Champ). Emily Viner unfortunately came in a little later with a puncture, in 6th place.
It was a riders course today, but with plenty of route choices on a pretty good 1:20 000 map. Rest day tomorrow, then on Friday it's the Medium course on a 1:15 000 which will provide plenty of frenetic activity. Fingers crossed for something. Don't know what. Just something.
Later, Gary

Middle Distance Final
The last individual race, the middle distance, of the 2004 MTBO world championships will take place tonight in Ballarat, Australia. Seven British competitors are taking part in the race. The rumours suggest that the area for the middle distance final will suit the 'orienteers' more than the long distance final did - a complex network of paths will give the competitors plenty of navigation challenges at high speed. The courses are 20k with 450m climb for the men and 14km with 350m climb for the women. There is no qualification race for the middle distance final so all 100 men and 52 women will be competing in the final. Starts are from 10am (midnight GMT)
Gary 10.34 (00.34 GMT)
Killian 11.02
Andy S 11.48

Killian 43rd
Andy S 54th
I think Paul made some pretty big mistakes because apparently he is cycling better than any of them. I don't know how Gary and Andy C got on.
Relay team for tonight is Steve, Andy S and Killian in that order. Not sure about the order of Gary, Andy C and Paul.

MTBO Round Up
You'll see Brooner's put a story up elsewhere. Most of the team are on the plane back as I write. cept Paul who has driven off to look for Priscilla in the desert, Charlotte who has gone to work a week in Sydney and Caitlin and I some Strictly Ballroom in Melbourne, boomerangs at Ayers Rock before flying to Christchurch at the end of the week, seeking a month of Kiwi craziness. (I met the AR Kiwi's at the event party, so I worry what I'll be dragged into next.
The Mid distance race was a good 'un which saw us all diving into some real technical mapping for the final two controls, which threw most people, cept Steve, who conveniently found Bergers wheel to hang on to. The relay was THE best entertainment. Killian and I were on the first leg and witnessed a whole host of crashes to the first controls, including straight into trees, other riders and face plants over the bars at controls. Killian nearly had a head to head with a big Roo, and I decked it on one of the loose bends. There were queues at the ambulance as we all got swabbed and dressed. The mispunches were just another of those SI anomalies (Killian and Andy C). We're pretty chilled about it, and our times may have put us in the top half of the field. Every race should be a relay! Best map and best action. So that's it. All over. Look forward to selection for next year. If you're a footie O reading this, then get on your bike, and try some MTBO. See you... Gary

Next year in Slovakia I think - september(ish) I understand that a lot of this year's team are thinking about it and I'm sure there are a few others who couldn't get the time off to go to Oz for long enough to make this year's competition feasible so next year will be pretty competitive. I think they are trying to get the criteria and selection races sorted out sooner rather than later.
