I'm trying to create my first course using Open Orienteering Map and Purple Pen, and I've hit a couple of problems:
1. The PDF file I created from OOM looks just as every other such map I've seen (bottom left corner here), but when I try to create a PDF file of the course from PP, the image is truncated, even if I set the print area to be the whole map .
2. I have the PP file in a folder "Y:\my name\documents\orienteering\eventname Maprun" and PP is happy with saving its own file here, and also with generating the control descriptions PDF here. But if I try to generate the PDF map in this folder, it complains that it does not have access to the path (although it warns me if the file already exists in that location). I've seen similar behaviour with some other applications too, but am at a loss to understand it - especially as the application in this case is happy writing other files to that folder.
Can anyone explain what's causing these problems and how to overcome them, please?

Re: Purple Pen Problems
Problem 1 looks like it might be the positioning of the print area / map within the frame, or alternatively the size of the borders. Try adjusting one or both of these. Also check the page size selected is definitely A4 and not a smaller custom size.
I have no idea re. problem 2.

Re: Purple Pen Problems
Problem 2: Is the basemap PDF also stored in that location, and does it have the same name as the PP event?

Thanks. I had the same thoughts, but the paper size is definitely A4 and the margin is zero; on the "set print area" screen, I can see that it is set to the entire map. Looking in Acrobat Reader, the original map from OOM takes up the entire sheet (and I can't see any way to change this), so a little of the border would have been cropped in printing unless I selected "fit", whereas the PP one seems to have removed rather more.

Yes and no: yes, it's in the same location, and no, it doesn't have the same name.

Re: Purple Pen Problems
I found a way (of sorts) round the issues, by just using OOM and placing the controls in that, avoiding Purple Pen altogether: is that what others do? If I do that, though, is there a way to drag controls if I got them in a slightly wrong place, or is it a case of delete and add again? And is there a way of getting both a start and a finish symbol? The only option seems to be "start/finish", or which you can only have one, which confusingly displays as a finish symbol on the screen and a start triangle on the PDF map!

Re: Purple Pen Problems
I have had the same problem 2 of being told I don't have access to write a file from PP. When the old version of the file concerned is still open in Adobe Acrobat.
One possible work around for the first problem is to set the print area in PP for that course as user defined and specify the exact dimensions.

Re: Purple Pen Problems
MJG got there first - I was going to suggest that you might have the file open in another program which can prevent it being overwritten. Acrobat is a likely candidate for a PDF file. There is a utility built into Windows which you can use to discover what program has a file locked open if this happens :

Another (less likely) possibility is that the file has been made read only. In Windows Explorer right click on the file and click "Properties". At the bottom of the window ensure the "Read-only" checkbox is not ticked.

The file couldn't have been open, because it hadn't been created at that point (though I know Acrobat Reader does open the files after they've been created to generate icons). However, I've cracked the second point: it was my antivirus program (Avast). Apparently it doesn't consider Purple Pen to be a "trusted" app; I'm not sure why that only affects course files, but adding it to the list seemed to fix things. This probably explains why one or two other programs behave the same, though I've no idea why it didn't also stop me creating descriptions files or, indeed, the Purple Pen file itself.
Thanks for your suggestion on the first point: I'll give it a try later.

Re: Purple Pen Problems
Well, the first issue seems to have gone away, but I don't know why: I discovered that I could create an untruncated map on a different PC and when the printer (which can't print right to the edge) was switched off, but since then I've been able to do the same from the original PC with the printer on or off. Very strange!

Re: Purple Pen Problems
Here's another problem
I have planned a score in Purple Pen.The control descriptions are ordered according to their points value, lowest to highest. How can I change the order to SI unit code, lowest to highest ? I can't find anyhing in the PP Help menu.
Cheers.

Re: Purple Pen Problems
I ended up just manually renumbering all the units to match the allocated score. That's a bit tedious but ho-hum.
