Let’s hope land owners get the memo this time...

Hardly "essential" travel is it?

Re: Restart of O
There are two conditions that need to be fulfilled for orienteering to properly return:
1/ Outdoor activities allowed
2/ Travel beyond ‘local’ area allowed
It looks like 1/ will happen on 29th March in England, not sure about 2/ yet but rumours are that it will be on the same day (i.e., the default ‘stay at home’ order will be lifted and you can travel to things that are open / available)
If so, great news. There is a very fortuitously timed BAOC event in the calendar on the 30th!
I was also hoping the British Middles on the 8th of May might happen, but I guess this also needs the other nations to open up, plus presumably overnight accommodation?

Whew... evening event planned for March 30th! We'll probably have to wait a year or two for Forestry Commission or whatever it's called to catch up.

Confirmation that ‘stay at home’ rule is also going on 29th March in England, although people should ‘try not to travel’...
So I guess local-ish O events should be ok from then, subject to BOF confirmation. They’ve been pretty quick to respond lately so hopefully shouldn’t be too long.

Re: Restart of O
And on 12 April (hopefully) lots of other stuff opens like zoos and theme parks, at which point it would be a bit nonsensical to ask people not to travel. So at current rate at least local / regional O should be able to fully restart by then at the latest.
Hotels won’t open before 17 May so I guess no champs before then?
@Jon - yes I’m only talking about England

British Orienteering will need to wait for DCMS to issue their updated guidance on grassroots sport before they can figure out whether the pre-lockdown orienteering guidance needs any revision. Previous experience suggests that that won't be out for a few days.

Re: Restart of O
@buzz, for ‘hotels’ read ‘hotels, b&bs & hostels’ (not sure about campsites.) Seemed difficult / unfair to organise a champs if overnight stays are in effect not possible? But it feels tantalisingly close either way.

Re: Restart of O
The accommodation options permitted to open before 17 May are "those that do not require shared use of bathing, entry/exit, catering or sleeping facilities", which would seem to rule out campsites with communal toilet/shower blocks.
Hotels (i.e. Premier Inns and the like) are generally the cheapest indoor accommodation option for families and groups - cheaper per person than B&Bs or hostels - although it looks likely that those will all be opening at the same time.

Re: Restart of O
Will be great to get back to orienteering.
Some interesting things for clubs to think about.
By the time orienteering events get going again regularly it will likely be late spring or summer, just in time for the summer (semi) closed season.
This means for most people a year and a half without orienteering. So:
- Will club members still be enthusiastic volunteers, or will they have got used to a quiet life without organising events etc?
- No doubt the keen types have kept their fitness up, but what should clubs do to help the punter standard orienteers who aren't now fit enough to enjoy the sport?
- What about juniors? Are we still expecting 14 year olds to run Blue courses (not uncommon in orienteering competitions)? What do we do to help their enthusiasm?
- Can we promote orienteering to those people who have taken up walking, maybe some light running, during lockdown, but don't consider themselves 'athletes'?
My personal opinion is that a few months (or maybe the rest of 2021) where landowners are reluctant to grant permission for big events might prove a blessing in disguise if clubs instead focus their efforts on small local events, training and rebuilding the 'club spirit'.

It is a bit of a jump from those who went into M14 (from orange to light green) in 2020 to gi to M16 (blue) in 2022. Orange to blue in 6 months of orienteering.
