Re: MapRunF
I found the MapRunG app much more responsive and would recommend ditching the smartphone for a compatible Garmin watch. I would have struggled to set up etc but thankfully Brian sorted it for me. I felt it saved me c 20 - 30 secs on a 5k course.

Re: MapRunF
This seems such a daft question - did the vivoactive3 bleep at the controls?
I got a bit anxious when I read one comparison chart that had the forerunner giving audio/visual/vibration alerts, but only listed the vivoactive as visual/vibration, which wouldn't be much use for MapRun! Gratefull for any advice.

There is an audible low pitched buzz as it vibrates on your wrist. I found this perfectly acceptable.

Re: MapRunF
One thing to bear in mind is that some models (e.g. Forerunner 235) have a memory limit which limits the number of controls. The FR235 has been tested with 40. The documentation suggests that all the affected models have the same memory size, so presumably 40 is likely to be a fair limit on them all

Older watches may not be able to run MapRunG successfully. Models that are in doubt are those with only 64k of memory. These include: FR230, FR235, fenix 3,d2bravo, d2bravo_titanium, fenix3, fenix3_hr, FR920xt and Vivoactive

Re: MapRunF
I recently tried MapRunF for the first time with my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with Android 5.0). It appears to work at the start and will punch the first two controls but then gives up and the Green GPS panel at the bottom goes permanently Red. No further controls or the Finish will register. It's not going to sleep or doing anything else and it's not a problem with the GPS signal at the control locations because if I Quit, go back and reload the map and start again but head to the last control then the Finish it works fine. Carrying my wife's phone at the same time, hers has no problem with MapRunF! Has anyone else come across this problem?

I've had this problem with two different phones. Some manipulations with Location options in Settings (switching things off and on) usually help after a few attempts, the bar goes green again and the app registers the control, but a better solution would be nice.

Thanks - Have tried this without success so far - not exactly ideal anyway. I'm just frustrated that I can't find a logical reason for the phone stopping GPS tracking after a few minutes. It even does the same during a walk to the start, i.e. before course timing has been acvtivated (and before the sleep setting switches off the screen). Peter Effeney was helpful but couldn't offer an explanation though I tried the various things in Settings with Location and Battery (turning optimise app to save battery off)

Re: MapRunF
I had a phone which would briefly flick on location in the notification bar and then turn it off. Within MapRunF it showed no GPS was available. I used "GPS Status & Toolbox" to reset it and after that it worked OK:

However, I do have a friend whose phone fails to work unless he wakes the phone up and waits for a GPS lock at each control - like you he has tried disabling all the power save options. His phone is a Samsung too (as was the one I initially had problems with).

Re: MapRunF
With MaprunF I have had the same problem with a Samsung as your friend, but it works OK on a Motorola.
The same Samsung phone did not have the problem with the original Maprun, but it did often fail to register or take a long time to do so. My record "fail to register" was 16 / 33 sites visited, though I was just running through all of them without pausing as a deliberate test.

Re: MapRunF
You were obviously running too fast - straight through the target area within GPS sampling interval.

When you say "disabling all the power save options", does this include setting the screen to not go to sleep? I ask simply because this sounds like a problem that I had, which was solved by setting the screen to go to sleep after 30 minutes (the maximum option for my phone). I just have to remember to touch the screen before the 30 minutes is up, but even if I forget it turns what used to be a routine I had to perform at every control into one that I only have to perform once or twice a run.
I have also found that turning on Airplane Mode before the start usually improves the GPS accuracy and reliability. And fully charging my phone before a run also seems to help.

Re: MapRunF
Yes in my case I did NOT let the phone go to sleep but that didn't make any difference. It seems that there is a limit to the amount of GPS track the phone can store and then it stops registering GPS thereafter. I've given up on the Samsung now and bought a cheap Nexus 5 just to use for MapRunF. It works fine!

If you want to use MapRunG, then Amazon has a good deal on the Garmin 245 today -£179 (usually £249).

The 645 Music is on offer at £219 on garmin.com - has fancier features but a lower battery life.
