Re: Closing date reminder for TVOC Course Planning Competiti
The judges have asked me to post this:
Thanks to all of you who submitted an entry to the armchair planning competition (to plan an M21E course on Wendover). We had an amazing 27 entries, from all over the UK (well England and Scotland to be exact) and 4 from our own club TVOC.
We hope to announce the winner sometime a week today (1st June). The entries have been anonymised by a non-orienteer assigning a random number replacing the planners names. In this way the judges will not know who submitted the entry. Once we have decided who the medal positions we can then refer back to a master spreadsheet reuniting the numbers with the names.
We are still discussing criteria to define the best courses. Both of us have extensive experience on Wendover over the last 20 plus years and have planned major events there and one of us until recently maintained the Wendover map.
A number of people have thanked us for organising this competition so thanks for your comments. It will be a pleasure. Some of you have also commented that it is indeed possible to set a M21E course in Wendover. We will be reviewing the quality in due course.

Re: Closing date reminder for TVOC Course Planning Competiti
A message from the judges.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a competition! Your judges found this rather tough!
The entries were anonymised and we reviewed the 27 entries according to the following criteria:
· Corrected course length prorated from the Middle Distance course winning time is 22.1 to 24.5km.
· Maximum total climb of 5%.
· Long legs with good route choice.
· Short legs involving direction changes in intricate bits of forest.
Negative criteria also considered were:
· Legs involving dead running or doglegs.
· Legs that offered crossing the OOB field in the south or offered the OOB road to the north and might give some significant advantage to a competitor if they took them.
It’s fair to say that few entries, if any, met all these criteria.
We did not consider a spectator control or drinks points but some had included one or both, well done if you did.
On this basis we identified 5 entries for the final selection:
Peter Hornsby, Peter Jones, Tim Must, Jim Prowting and Ian Webb.
The final selection was based on which courses we would have enjoyed running the most i.e. those that had the legs which caused us to consider how to get to the next control. The final positions took a while and much discussion and we would remind entrants that the judge’s decision is final!
The winner is Ian Webb. The runners-up are Jim Prowting and next Tim Must. Well done all. Thanks to all who submitted entries. It was fun for the Judges at least!
Well we conclude that Wendover could host a BOC with back to back maps but is going to take a lot of hard work planning it.
We are contemplating an article in Compass Sport if the editor is interested.
Congratulations to Ian Webb who wins the free entry to the 2021 Chiltern Challenge.
Mark and Peter.

Are you going to publish the winning course on the TVOC website?

...or use it for next year's Chiltern Challenge?

Well done to Ian.
I didn't get round to finalising my course or submitting so this isn't sour grapes, but...

...feels on the long side. I would be interested in seeing your working on that, as it's longer than every Long distance in recent years (although, admittedly, many have been underplanned).Corrected course length prorated from the Middle Distance course winning time is 22.1 to 24.5km.

I initially thought the same but I then figured 'corrected' means 'corrected for height' so something like 16+650, which feels sensible enough. Not that I'm encouraging holding a BOC Long on Wendover!

Re: Closing date reminder for TVOC Course Planning Competiti
The competition instructions suggested that the 2017 British Middle Distance Championships M21E was won in 33.21 for 5.7km with 240m climb and the EWT for M21E Long is 90-100 min.
Doesn't that suggest a course length of around 16km? Am I missing something?

Re: Closing date reminder for TVOC Course Planning Competiti
Many thanks to Mark and Peter for doing this. It would be good to see the winners courses and have some brief feedback.
Regarding length, as well as the British Middles, I was guided by GG's run at the British Nights in similar but slightly less hilly Chiltern terrain a few months ago - 11.9km & 380m climb in 60.21 AT NIGHT.
So mine was 17.9km with 760m climb - which makes a corrected length of 25.5km which might have been a bit over long but I think still within range... 15.7km corrected in 60.21 = 98 mins for 25.5km corrected. Plus one trusts they'd be a bit quicker because of the daylight.
It is the British after all - gotta sort the men from the boys.

Response from one of the judges
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Corrected Course Length is indeed corrected for height climb according to the formula CCL = distance in KM + height climb in m/100.
I think Tim provides a good example. Note we only used this as guide and nobody was penalised or DSQ for falling outside the quoted range.
So for the record the top 3 courses were: Ian 16.7km 795m, Jim 15.5km 810m, and Tim as his note says 17.9km 760m, perhaps a mite on the long side but interesting that it was based on GG. Not easy to keep the climb down.
Yes we will add the top 3 courses to the TVOC website plus a brief commentary on each one. Great idea especially as it is unlikely to make Compass Sport now having discussed with the editor.
Once we have worked out how to do this and written the commentary, I will add the link when its done. Give us a few days.
Thanks for your comments and feedback.
Mark

Ah ok, I missed the 'corrected' keyword. Thanks for explaining.

Re: Closing date reminder for TVOC Course Planning Competiti
Can I ask why the need for so many controls? If it is a "long" course, is it actually necessary to have 36 controls? It feels a bit like a a long "middle" with a few long legs. Just putting it our there for discussion as there has been lots of mopeing in the last few years about the (a) lack of proper "classic" length races, and (b) planners having far too many controls in races.
