TVOC invites you to take part in a Course Planning Competition.
The challenge is for participants to set a British Championship M21E Long Distance Course on the latest Wendover Woods map.
Wendover is one of TVOC’s quality areas, but is limited in size. It has been used for a number major competitions, including the British Middle Distance Championships in 2017 and the British Relay Championships way back in 1984.
There are some people in the club who believe the area is large enough to accommodate (at least theoretically) a high quality M21E Long Distance Course. The purpose of this competition is to see if anybody can produce such a course, and to give maximum scope to this, for this competition, a few previous access restrictions have been removed.
The entries will be judged by Mark Thompson and Peter Riches who planned the 2017 Middle Distance Championships.
There will be a prize for the best course of a free entry to the Chiltern Challenge 2021

Can you put the pdf somewhere you don't need a dropbox account to download?

I don't think you need a dropbox account to download. When you click gnitworp's link, you should find a download button to the right of the sign-in button.
However I have also now put the two documents (instructions plus map) onto TVOC's website at https://tvoc.org.uk/events/prize-armcha ... mpetition/
TVOC is very keen to have plenty of entries, to maximise the ideas for using Wendover. So do please enter.

Hi Alun/gnitworp
A British Champs (or any Level A/B event) M/W21E course is specified by the rules to have the map at 1:15,000, but you have provided a 1:10,000 map...obviously we can adapt the print scale if needed but do you have a 1:15,000 version please?
Or have E&CC provided special dispensation for this competition to use 1:10,000?

Why did I do that...

Re: Prize Armchair Course Planning Competition
There's no such thing as a 1:10000 map in ISOM2017. There's just the fieldwork to ISOM2017 standard - which we have - and the choice of printing scale.
It's a pretty sketchy area for a BOC, which makes the planning challenge doubly fun.
I presume the second prize is two entries to the Chiltern Challenge .

This is a theoretical fun competition to provide a distraction during Covid-19. If you share Jon X's problem, then assume the special dispensation for 1:10000 was granted

Hi Jon X,
Firstly, apologies for my somewhat kneejerk response to your perfectly reasonable enquiry, that I fear has only served to trivialise the competition. My more soberly considered reply is: yes, for the purposes of this competition, you should assume that special dispensation has been granted for the use of a 1:10000 scale map. I hope my inappropriate first response has not deterred you from submitting an entry.

Think I'll enter.... but looking at the area I'll need a different approach to when I actually planned BOC 21E

To be clear, what I think graeme is saying is that 1:10000 maps in ISOM2017 involve a straight enlargement of everything, including the course planning symbols. So, assuming the map has been surveyed to be legible at 1:15000, the choice of printing scale shouldn't make a difference to the planning.
(This is also why there's really no excuse not offering 1:15000 maps for Black courses, at least on areas where the map would be legible at that scale.)

Sounds fun!
Can I suggest that the courses are assessed anonymously so that the judges aren't swayed by the reputations of some of the entrants which will no doubt include WOC and BOC planning legends!

Have just been told by the judges that they will apply a number to each entry so that they are kept anonymous. They will explain their methodology when they publish the results.

And if it isn't legible at 15000 by M21s then it won't be legible at 10000 by M70s.

Not so simple I'm afraid... some M21s have poor vision and some 70s good vision in just the same way that some 21s can't run very fast and some 70s can!

Except 'proper' 21E can run very fast.... certainly in a BEOC. Probably the majority of entries in 21E class in the UK aren't really elite orienteers
