1985 Inter Services Champs at The Roaches
Does anyone happen to have a access to a copy of the results from the 1985 Badge event (?) held at The Roaches in 1985. Our Army Orienteering history is missing the name of the Women's Inter Service Champion: http://www.baoc.info/sites/default/file ... 1513680458

Re: 1985 Inter Services Champs at The Roaches
I have the following from one of the event officials, who I am sure will not mind me reproducing it here, for posterity :
We bused competitors from the car park at Tittesworth Reservoir up to the start and finish.
On the Saturday the planner put out the controls and controller checked them. We left the area at about 5 .00 pm on a beautiful evening with the moon and stars coming out. Next morning it was a beautiful sunny day in Congleton but as we got closer to the Roaches there was snow everywhere, and it was about 8 inches thick- we had to delay the start as controller was busy out on the area shaking snow from the controls.
We got everybody back as the clouds gathered and decided against control collecting and as we left the car park the snow started again. We finally rescued the controls about 3 weeks later.
Truly an event to remember!

Re: 1985 Inter Services Champs at The Roaches
It was a nice race running in the snow I remember it well. A late start was very much an advantage as running in the fresh snow covered heather was hard work and it tracked up quite a lot. The other event I remember with big snow was a few years later when I was a student. The British night champs was out the back of Pendle in a mixed wood and moorland area. I remember there the snow was a lot firmer out on the moor it made for some fast going. We had a long wait before leaving as the minibus driver was the last finisher and then there was some pushing to get out of the car-park. I fear that in modern times both the events would of been canceled so this is not an experience modern runners will have.

Captain Freefall Matheson unfortunately left the Army in 1985 but was on the verge of selection to run for their team. He did however plan the Army Championships (UKLF) at Leith Hill with a certain Roger Lott overseeing as Controller.

Here's a tough ask - does anyone have the map?
I live nearby and never knew it had been used for orienteering so quite intrigued.

Here you go.

I think it's probably from the event in question and my course.
My dad kept all old maps and presented all us kids once we had left home with at least one copy of every one which I still have in the filing cabinet in my new office room.
The my last 5 years worth are not filed but in a big heap...

I like the note - "Many of the crags are LETHAL!"
They look fairly innocuous on the map.

The organiser in 1985 noted that it had been tricky to get all the necessary permissions, so perhaps this is why it has not been used more frequently

Ramshaw Rocks, around 1 - 4, has been used since. I'll dig out a map.
The main overhang on the Roaches themselves is ascended by The Sloth.
The separate rocky hill in the SW is Hen Cloud.
Quick quiz - how did the The Roaches get their name ?
(I grew up near there - just round the corner and down the road from where TomTom now lives)

TomTom - PM me with your email address for the Ramshaw map. I cannot get it small enough to attach.
