IOF wrote:We regret to inform the global masters orienteering community that the World Masters Orienteering Championships (WMOC ) 2020 scheduled to be held August 7-15 in Slovakia has to be cancelled as a consequence of the ongoing Corona (Covid-19) virus pandemic. This decision was made by the organisers following consultation with the Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic and other experts. The IOF has also been consulted and fully supports the decision of the organiser. Our common priority is on protecting the health and well-being of the participants.
However, this does not mean that the WMOC will not be in Slovakia. The event will be re-scheduled to be held in Slovakia at the latest in 2023. More than 3100 entries had been made to WMOC in Slovakia with several months remaining, so the popularity of the event and the destination are obvious.
The international sports calendars for 2020 and 2021 are being revised and the overall impact is not yet known. Particularly the final placement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the calendar can have an impact on many sports events including the World Masters Games/WMOC in Japan in 2021. But is too early to tell. The IOF will come back with information as it becomes available.
Regarding entries already made to the WMOC 2020 in Slovakia, the organisers will be contacting all participants. Please await this information.

Re: WMOC 2020 postponed
Completely understandable at this time. Slovakia won the bid to host the 2020 World Masters ahead of a bid from Wales and the same outcome would have arisen if Wales had won the bid.
I wonder if there would be a further chance for the World Masters to be in South Wales, maybe 2024? Too early to really consider until the impact of Covid-19 on the fixtures calendars settles down.

Re: WMOC 2020 postponed
It would be great if the WMOCs are all pushed back a year with Slovakia rearranged for 2021. Then IOF make the decision to break with the irrational link up with the World Masters Games every four years. Quite why they do this is beyond me

Would also avoid any possible conflict of Olympics vs WMOC in Japan.

WMOC 2021 Kansai has already said there is no conflict with the Tokyo Olympics, and that it will still go ahead in 2021.

My understanding is that the goalposts are still moving regarding next year's World Masters Games, so it's not yet certain that the Kansai WMOC will be in 2021.

This would suit me and DJM because we both get a new age class next year (he's 2 days older than me, which might be critical ) and we wouldn't have to trek all the way to Japan to compete.

Quite possibly nothing is certain for 2021, in the UK or worldwide.DJM wrote:... My understanding is that the goalposts are still moving regarding next year's World Masters Games, so it's not yet certain that the Kansai WMOC will be in 2021.
A vaccine may not be widely available by then, so some restrictions are likely to remain. And international travel may be one of the last things to return to the 2019 "normal".

But would probably have a lot fewer Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans to compete against.

WMOC2020 0rganisers wrote:Last weekend the IOF Council at its meeting discussed the fate of future IOF events affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. It was decided that if the World Masters Games (WMG) in Japan (which includes WMOC) takes place in 2021, then the postponed WMOC 2020 would be offered a 2023 slot. In the meantime, the WMG organisers have recently confirmed that their event will go ahead as planned, so we are pleased to announce that the WMOC in Slovakia will now take place in 2023.
Many athletes expressed great interest in this year’s event and were really looking forward to roaming our woods. There is no need to despair though. Terrains won’t go anywhere and the organisation team is ready to deliver a high-quality event in three years’ time. Even though it is a very long time till then, we strongly believe that it will be worth waiting for.
Currently, we are assessing the best way to refund runners who have already entered the 2020 event. The terms of financial settlement will be published in the upcoming days.
Thus the future WMOC programme is now
2021 Japan
2022 Italy
2023 Slovakia
