Re: Fiendishly Difficult Quiz
WE HAVE A WINNER who has now submitted 5 correct answers CONGRATULATIONS SCOTT!
I think he identified himself from the later ‘hints’
The answers with detailed explanations are attached
I thought it would be nice to reprise this old contest. OK I admit to and apologise for the vanity element that prompted this – maybe I made 4 lucky guesses! My one wrong answer was Hoover Dam for Question 3, which many people submitted
I must admit that the questions, even with further hints, were rather ambiguous leading to a lot of reasonable speculative guesses.
For Question 1, maybe the word ‘dissected’ was used rather than bisected, because the Arctic Circle actually cuts Great Bear Lake into one large and three small pieces.
Some answers were arguably as good or better than the ‘right’ answer, e.g., Cragside for Question 2 and Hoover Dam or Lake Mead for Question 3
Many thanks to all participants who I hope enjoyed this little distraction from prevailing woes!

Re: Fiendishly Difficult Quiz
Thanks, Gnitworp! I've certainly enjoyed learning an awful lot of useless facts about the Soo Locks, Ciudad del Este, and the history of Rhode Island while trying to figure out the last few clues. It's been a very welcome distraction indeed.
I'm still not entirely sure I understand why Rhode Island is a familiar geographical shape - there's no way I would ever have got that without your hints.

Dead straight north and west boundaries with long lagoons and deep rias forming its coastline? A more 'familiar shape' to Americans than Brits I suspect

Q1 - according to my research the 7th largest lake is Lake Baikal.
It probably varies depending on whether you are measuring volume or surface area.

Re: Fiendishly Difficult Quiz
I thought that for a bit, but - having come to the conclusion that we were looking for a lake or island that straddled either the Arctic/Antarctic circles or one of the tropics - I realised that the question setter wasn't counting the Caspian Sea as a lake.

According to Wikipedia, there isn't a reliable ranking by volume because it's hard to measure and can change dramatically over time. Their ranking by area puts Great Bear Lake 8th, but that includes the Caspian Sea (which some might say isn't a lake), and Lakes Huron and Michigan (which apparently are sometimes considered as a single entity).
