"As from midnight tonight, Forestry England are closing all forest facilities, including car parks across England. The decision has been made to ensure that people are not congregating in car parks, playing closely together on play trails or using communal toilets unnecessarily."
This is partly the reason:
"URGENT MESSAGE.. PLEASE SHARE Sunday 22 March
Hamsterley forest is now at full capacity, and in support of government advice to maintain social distancing, please DO NOT attempt to travel to Hamsterley forest today."
All the usual visitor hotspots in this area have been packed.

I understand the request for social distancing, to prevent / slow transmission, but there are benefits to fresh air, exercise and doing what we can to stay healthy (and a.f.a.i.k. that is still being encouraged). The more locations that are closed, the more pressure it will put on the increasingly small number which remain accessible, increasing the risks of transmission and making them more likely to be closed as well.

To quote Forestry England "The forests are open, the facilities are closed. Social distancing must be followed".

Yes, no restriction on folks going to the forest, just want to restrict numbers in the hotspots. Smaller car parks will be open, according to man on R4 this morning.

In the New Forest all the larger car parks, ie the ones with toilet facilites, are closing tonight but the others will remain open.

Re: Orienteering and Covid
One for the statisticians to ponder .....
What happens to the ranking system if Corona virus extends for many months and many people start to lose results - worst case 12 months and no-one has any counting scores left ?
I seem to recall that when it was started up it was seeded with multiple iterations of the same results until it stabilised.
Would the same need to be done again - and using what data if there have been no events ?
Would it just need to be left to build up again over time, and how would it cope starting from zero ?
Should a month's old results be re-applied each month there are no results, to keep it ticking over ? e.g. reload all March 2019 results at end of March 2020, with a year added to the event date, same with April 2019 results at the end of April etc. for as many months as are necessary.
Any other approaches ?

Re: Orienteering and Covid
There's been no formal decision on this year, but I know that British Orienteering have started to consider options.
Personally, I think the neatest solution would be to freeze the ranking list as it was on 16 March, and basically pretend that the time that elapses during the suspension period doesn't happen. So, when orienteering does resume, the period of time considered in calculating both the ranking score (someone's top six scores, used to work out your position in the list) and the current score (someone's average score, used to calculate new points) would be 12 months + however many days orienteering is suspended for, until the anniversary of the end of the suspension (when it would go back to 12 months). It gets (even) more complicated if we end up with two or more separate suspension periods...
Of course, it's not the top priority right now, and ultimately it'll depend on what can be implemented within the existing system, and on the cost of doing so.

Some of us have suddenly got a lot of spare time on our hands, so have plenty of thinking time left over from the important things to think about the unimportant things.

I'm working on a 'highly unimportant' quiz for further trivial diversion - watch this space

Indeed....why login to an orienteering forum and then complain that someone is discussing orienteering as diversion from the current pandemic.

Yes, my question was intended as a diversion for those of a mathematical mind.
I entirely agree in the grand scheme of things it does not matter one jot and was not intended to detract from the seriousness of the current circumstances.
We need to keep ourselves occupied by talking about things other than Covid and the weather.
