Dreadful situation and not looking good for this weekend. A bunch of orienteers running/wading around the city is probably the last thing needed at the moment.

Re: Venice O meeting
I trust SYO and EBOR are on drier ground and there isn't an event in Fishlake (note to town planners that the clue was in the name).

They've done the right thing and cancelled.
They didn't really have any choice anyway given the situation and forecast, but also the decision to go ahead in 2012 (when heavy flooding had just about subsided, but then police stopped the later starters) has been the main reason why the event is now so much smaller than it used to be.

Don't worry - in a few years we'll be able to do canoe-O round Venice...

That will require a bit of excess baggage, or orgainsers providing a fleet for hire.

Arguably you already can... In a few years you'll be able to do canoe-o round a lot more coastal cities unless we get our act together.

Re: Venice O meeting
Plenty of gondolas moored up to use for the canoe O.
It was not pleasant yesterday, at the time of the supposed race the water levels were between knee and waist high for virtually the whole city. Saturday evening would have been ok.
I admire how resilient the Venetians are and how quickly they get the bars and restaurants open up between the tides, knowing that in a few hours they have got to repeat the pumping and mopping up operations.

Re: Venice O meeting
I suspect the point he was making that canoe O is possible now in Venice - with the current sea level.
Once Venice has subsided into the lagoon it will cease to be of interest.

I was going to post something about how Venice is also slowly sinking due to isostatic rebound, but this low resolution Wikipedia map suggests that it's pretty much bang on the zero contour.

More to do with 1 - Water aquifers being depleted and 2 - Subsidence of sediments rather than isostatic rebound.

And, apparently, subduction, which I confess is not a factor that would have occurred to me!
