Don't leave it until just before you go to a place where TBE is endemic. The first two shots need to be a month apart and apparently will give you 60% protection. A third, at least five months later, should protect you for three to five years before another booster is required. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick-borne_encephalitis_vaccine.
My local GP directed me to a travel clinic in Oxford. Each injection was quite costly, but a chat to an Australian at WMOC in Latvia (who had been infected just after I'd met him ten years previously) convinced me that they were worthwhile. Just about to have the third one in the initial set.

Re: Ticks
Is this something BOF could provide advice on? Particularly if TBE is now in the UK.
Also I think it would be a useful exercise to investigate the prevalence of Lyme Disease amongst British orienteers. I know of more than one person who has been affected, one severely. I suspect there are many more who simply leave the sport once they are infected.
AFAIK there is no inoculation available for Lymes. Please put me right if I'm wrong.

Re: Ticks
Good idea Homer. I know of two people within our club who have been infected with Lyme disease, one of whom is still feeling the effects many months afterwards. If BO collected data, it could give valuable feedback to the NHS, orienteers and others at a higher risk of infection.

I've had the vacination ever since that WC in Ukraine...I remember when I got it from the GP in Scotland the nurse was ready to stick the needle in & I just asked in passing if it was the Austrian vaccine... the nurse looked & discovered in wasn't... it was for Japanese & not tick borne.
Also got a friend in Vilnius (retired now) who became a millionaire through selling vaccination to the public
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

CompassSport Magazine had an excellent article "How not to Die in Europe" in the August 2010 (Issue 4) magazine about the Australian Hugh which Roger mentions. Back issues available from the website ...
He is the only person/Orienteer I have ever heard about who got TBE.
In Sweden a jab is 410 sek at https://vaccindirekt.se/ which is a chain of vaccination 'shops' you can just walk in off the street and use (15% student discount!). Half the price of the UK. They also have buses that tour around and attend O events occasionally too. Many get vaccinated. Forest is ubiquitous in Sweden and most people go in them.
There were 391 cases in Sweden of TBE in 2017 which was a rise. Nowhere does it want to seem to tell me if any of these resulted in death. But if the brain inflammation is bad, you might have some life long issues.
If you have had TBE, you are immune from it for life. (which will save you some money!)
