Re: British Champs Weekend - Yorkshire
OK, the old people getting more injuries point makes sense. I was injured (or actually just about recovering from injury) at JK2019 (though for the middle I also got lost!) so I wasn't thinking that my scores there should have been higher. In fact I'm not thinking my scores should be higher in general, just that they should could from the races I target and do well in! But maybe my peers who have bad runs (perhaps because of injury or because the course is longer than they usually do at regional events) are being excluded. It doesn't really matter except perhaps for those who don't ever run up so don't gain from the younger ones messing up in technical areas or at night. Most of the top folk in any age group tend to run up anyway.

Re: British Champs Weekend - Yorkshire
I did some research last night on the ranking system and the M65 BOC ranking points.
The first thing I learned was that its not the average of your best 6 scores being used but your actual average over all ranking events, termed mean of your current scores
In M65 the average variance of the current scores and the average of the best 6 is around 5%.
In the recent BOC at M65, the ranking points scored at the event compared your your current score is around half of one perecent, ie most scored very very close to their current score.
Ok yted would need to run in about 45 mins for his score to be in his best 6, about 6 minutes faster then he actually did.

6 minutes faster... that would have been a good run! Meanwhile here's some other data. I have looked at the top 5 in some age groups so that is 6 runs each and counted how many come from JKs (including sprint), BOCs or Home Internationals - races where the top folk would mostly do their own course and try their best. I just looked at men but there's no reason to believe it would be different for the women. These are the results:
M16 16 out of 30 from the key races.
M18 19
M20 14
M21 18
M35 12
M45 10
M55 5
M65 3
M75 5
A small part of the higher numbers in M21 and especially M35/45 is from foreign-based British orienteers who only return for the major races but it doesn't negate the general trend. As I've said before, this deficit in major race scores for old folk didn't used to happen.

I think this is due to a wider difference between the person's average score (that is used in the ranking calculations) and their average of their top 6 scores.
In M65 its around 95%, I had a look at M45 where its near 98%.
Why - could be several reasons - 1). The top 65's do compete at higher level in regional / night events, where they score much higher points.
2). Competing in more events which will give a wider range of points scored
3). Inconsistent runs maybe due to injuries being carried or others!
At BOC in M65 the finishing order was very close to the ranking order, hence most scored very similar to their average score, the average difference between their ranking points scored and their average score was just 0.5%
