I'm sure there are many here who will have views on the Talent and Performance Pathway, so now is your chance to give some feedback. Copied from the BOF website:
The Talent and Performance Pathway Working Group is carrying out a review of British Orienteering’s talent and performance pathway with a view to making recommendations as to how it should operate in the future. This is in the context of all Sport England funding for the pathway being removed as of 2021.
As part of this review, they would like to receive views on their experiences from athletes who have been or still are involved in the pathway in some way or other over the last 15 years or so – e.g. membership of one of the junior squads, development squads, talent squads, performance squads etc – names have changed over the years.
A questionnaire has been created for this purpose, and we are seeking input from as many athletes and former athletes as possible.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TandPAthletes
Similar input is also sought from coaches and parents.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TandPCoaches
Deadline for completion of the surveys is Sunday 2nd June.
Given that we are looking back over the last 15 years, many athletes who have been involved in the past will have moved on. Any help in widely disseminating this request for input would be much appreciated.

Thanks for posting - saves me a task.
And yes, as much input from as many people as possible please.
And to emphasise what the announcement says, if you are in contact with people who have been involved in the past, but are perhaps not so active in the sport now, it would be really helpful if you could forward them the link to the survey and encourage them to complete it.

Re: Talent and Performance Pathway Review Call for Feedback
As a parent of kids who aspired to selection for the Junior Squad and for Junior Internationals (but who were ultimately unsuccessful) I thought my feedback might be of interest . However, having read the survey questions, it appears they are only after the views of those who were actually successful in being selected for the Talent Pathway.

Your input would certainly be welcome, Homer. Questions 5, 6 ,7 on the Coaches survey perhaps. And if you don't think that gives you a suitable heading, please use question 13.

Re: Talent and Performance Pathway Review Call for Feedback
Guessing you maybe looking at Athlete's survey Homer. Have just been told that the link to the Coaches / Parents survey on the British Orienteering website points to that. I will ask for it to be corrected. In the mean time the correct link is here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TandPcoaches
And Bart and/or Lisa's reflections would be very welcome too - questions 6,7,8.9,10 in the athlete survey perhaps ?

Mark,
It might be worth saying who is on the "Talent and Performance Pathway Working Group" and if there are other ways to contact the group apart from through the survey.
Further questions some people might have are:
1) Is it possible to give information/views in confidence?
2) Is it possible to give information anonymously?

Many congratulations to British M20 Elite Champion Alastair Pedley.
Never selected by anyone for anything...
Is that enough feedback yet?

No.
Congratulations also to Evie Conway, winner of W18 Elite at both the British Champs and the JK.
Also not selected for anything despite incomplete British teams for some of the junior internationals.

If there is one aspect of junior selections that should be changed then this is it.
Full teams should be sent to both EYOC and JWOC, with the competitors allowed to take part in all of the races if they want to.

That was also splendid : It's always impressive when an athlete bounces back from disappointment.
But at least Evie was in the talent squad, and I think it's unhelpful to muddle that the Talent Pathway with gripes about selection. Credit when they get it right: the selectors did pick a non-squad athlete last year who then won EYOC. If people can get to that British and European championship level without being in the "Pathway", despite the "Pathway" skimming off all the top talent, then what exactly is it achieving?
Listening to the juniors, it becomes quite clear: "It was only the British". The talent pathway has created a total disdain for domestic competition, a consequent disdain for those juniors who aren't selected and ultimate disdain for the sport when, at 21 level, the Talent Squad graduates can't get selected either.
Rip it up and start again.

Agreed, but what does it say about the Talent Squad if members are not selected for races (and places left unfilled) even though they've had some decent results in selection races?

It means the selectors think the athletes would have a bad time if they went. I've never been selected, nor been a selector, but I know fine well that for many young people these international races aren't a good experience, especially if they do badly. (Not that they can admit it for fear of future non-selection.)
But the selection of one more person to have the stress of being the weak link in the team, and the transfer of the disappointment of non-selection to someone else, doesn't amount to a big deal.
The problem is how the whole ethos is about selection, something essentially out of the control of the runners and always open to the suspicion of unfairness and bias.
Try talking to ex-juniors: they don't know, remember or care how people got on in races, who won the JK, who is the National Champion, all they've been taught to care about is who got selected. I'll bet not one person would swap Evie or Alastair's BOC title for their selection to a race where they know full well they won't be competitive. Then we wonder why they vanish once they turn 21 and nobody selects them.
Moaning about the selectors only entrenches this misguided priority.

They could always try asking the juniors. Oh wait, the athlete feedback last year stated that they athletes were unanimous in wanting full teams to be selected for each international.

My first 2 international races for GB resulted in something like 3rd last and 2nd last... Didn't stop me continuing and trying to improve (nor the selectors continuing to pick me...).
A stronger focus on "performance" rather than "results" would help juniors handle "poor" results as they could see what they need to work on rather than focus on what number they finished - over which they have little control.

Indeed.
The system failed to discourage a strong-minded man with the talent to win a silver medal at WOC who was living in the best area for orienteering in the UK.
You're a legend, but the sport can't survive on legends alone.
