Please spread the word on this one as this will help to improve attendances at all UK events.
One of our club members, Neil Bricknell, has published a free IPhone app, Event-O, to help users easily view UK orienteering events.
To find the app on the Apple App Store, entering EventO into the search option.
The two great things about it are that it's really simple and it's really quick. The exact opposite of the BO search page. Browsing events on the BO site can be a 5-10 minute job, this app allows you to browse in seconds. So because it's less of a barrier to finding out about events, it should help improve attendance.
The app shows a calendar. It will always show the UK national and international events (level A and B).
To change the settings to always show the regional (level C) events you're interested in, select the thumbs up symbol on the relevant region(s).
To change the setting to always show the local (level D) events you're interested in, select the thumbs up symbol of the relevant club(s).
To highlight an event as one you're interested in/going to, select the thumbs up symbol of the relevant event.
To add the event to your phone's calendar, click the notebook symbol of the relevant event.

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
Seems to me that checking fixtures etc etc on the BOF website is so much easier than using an app on an iphone Particularly if (like me) you don't have an iphone....
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Is the BOF fixtures list copyrighted and thus should only be available on their platform? This doesn't negate the fact that any member of the public can (and should) be able to access the fixtures list as it is not restricted to members.

No, the fixtures list is open data.

Not my experience at all. Why does it take so long?

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
I didn't mean my comments to be taken as Event-O vs the BO website. The website has its advantages too. I was thinking about myself personally when I want to do a quick browse I mostly use my phone, or perhaps a tablet because you don't have to wait for a laptop to start up (mine can take 5 minutes!). The BO site is designed to work on a bigger screen where its advantages show.
I think when people are planning what events (orienteering or otherwise) they are going to do at forthcoming weekends they are more likely to use a phone in future. Many people will have read about accessing the internet via mobile devices apparently overtaking desktop access (eg https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/ ... me/1444268).
The app also has the advantage of permanently filtered to the level of events you want (ie filter out all the activities and the local events that are too far away) so you can quickly thumb through and see what's coming up at the weekends in the next month or two.

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
Sean C - since you seem to be in the know - whats the thinking behind the colour coding?
I cant see any menu but is it
red = local
Orange = regional
Yellow = national
green = major?
Maybe just me but that seems like the opposite way around to what would be intuitive although I'm sure I'll get used to it?
Might be handy to have a way of flagging events that you are actually planning to go to or have entered too if there are any furhter developments planned.
Its a definitve asset though and will definitely use it.

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
To flag an event you are planning to go to, select the thumbs up on a particular event.
Neil asked me to review the app a few months ago (Apple have a 'beta' test feature for apps), but that was the first I've heard of it. It's entirely Neil's initiative. We've chatted about it in the pub after night events.
Funnily enough I didn't think anything of the colours, but that's the problem with having just one reviewer. The ideal feature for orienteers would be to choose the colours, ha ha.

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
Nice work - like it!
Would be great to be able to filter on distance and event level - so all local events within 10 miles, regional events within 50 miles, national events within 100 miles and any major event etc..
Perhaps also be able to add additional postcodes - for example I have family in Stafford and like orienteering in the Lake Districts so might be interested in regional events in those areas.
Filtering on event type would be good - urban or night for example.

Re: New Orienteering IPhone App
Excellent - top marks, very easy to see on one screen the events in my area/region/neighbouring region/clubs the events I maybe interested in going to.
I have all the WOA clubs ticked, NGOC and BOK - whereas using BO fixtures page I had to search by WOA, then by SWOA, then write them down month by month.
Must say something BO should have done ages ago but glad it is available now.
