Last year, Sarah Brown managed to get Sport England to award South London Orienteers money for a project to help teenagers develop the orienteering skills needed for more technical courses. We have called this our “Get Up to Speed” project.
As part of this project, we have produced a series of eight short videos. The videos are presented by athletes from the GB Orienteering team and are filmed in different locations. Their aim is to help juniors deal with more technically demanding courses, but they can also be used by newcomers wanting to “get up to speed”. Each video focuses on a specific orienteering skill.
We will launch one video each week on Friday at 5pm during January and February. They are designed to be downloaded to phones or tablets, so please share the links . The video release is linked to races and coaching sessions taking place across the South East: watch a film, focus on a technique and have a successful run.
The first video features Charlotte Ward talking about orientating the map. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LZpOZI94bU

Re: New Training Videos Released
In a happy coincidence we see presenter of the first video Charlotte Ward earned a Yorkshire Cross-Country vest over the weekend - I don't suppose those are easy to get - congratulations Charlotte.
As you may have seen the project of which the videos on YouTube are part is also communicating via Twitter - @sloweb - and Facebook - search "South London Orienteers".
If you do have a login to these services and watch a video and think it's good for our sport please consider like/share.
More specifically If you are a coach and plan to use the videos with teenagers Sarah (contact details on SLOW website at http://slow.org.uk/contactus/ ) would very much appreciate it if you would get in touch with your comments/feedback. Sarah can provide a downloaded version (in the unlikely event that you need help getting that), a pro-forma that may help with feedback, and some thoughts on usage if that would be helpful.
The better our reporting to Sport England the better for the sport.
And if you are a teenager Sarah would welcome your direct feedback, or you could perhaps even prompt one of your coaches to get in touch.
Thanks.

Re: New Training Videos Released
After SLOW started producing the training videos previously mentioned we soon realised that we needed an extra one to inform and guide beginners on what to expect at their first orienteering race. Otherwise each training video would have to go back over map symbols, how a control is shown etc. etc.. SLOW decided to fund this and we were delighted that Graham Gristwood agreed to host the video - his enthusiasm and expertise add a lot to the presentation. Filming took place near Stirling and we were very lucky with the weather for the time of year, with Barr Wood bathed in winter sunshine.
The film covers the orienteering map, courses, controls, equipment and what to wear, and ends with Graham linking to the series of Skills Videos (also on South London's Youtube Channel) so that once beginners have the guide they can easily see explanations of techniques to help them improve. We hope that clubs and affiliated groups will find this video a useful tool to promote orienteering and increase awareness of our sport - feel free to add links to it as you need.
The video was released today and can be found here https://youtu.be/GJfv90hgyT4
For more information on this and the other training vidoes, please contact South London Orienteers, Sarah Brown: sarah@slow.org.uk

Re: New Training Videos Released
If the quality of all the videos matches the first, then this is going to be a very impressive resource. Well done to all involved.
The intro for newcomers is a nice touch, and an impressive amount of information clearly presented in 5 minutes. My only concern is the glossing over of control descriptions. I find the biggest challenge with adult newcomers is them coming with a belief that they can't read a map. The principles of the colours are quickly explained and understood, but the hieroglyphics of features and control descriptions are not. There are handy guides available, a shot of which may prevent the shot of the control descriptions feeling like a wtf impenetrable barrier. But if there was the resource for another video dedicated to map/ control description symbols and what these actually look like on the ground, that would complete what looks like a very strong set of videos to support people transitioning to technical courses.

Re: New Training Videos Released
A couple of small changes have been made to the video: Start Orienteering || A Newcomer's Guide || Presented by Graham Gristwood so it has a new url: https://youtu.be/26Zc5AVkFis
This is a fair comment I think, like several other aspects, the subject is noted briefly and then the video keeps its pace up. There is this link in the description:
which in turn links to the Maprunner Guide to IOF Control Descriptions (and a revision quiz.) Maybe teenagers are pretty familiar from school with this sort of situation, but some adult newcomers have become less comfortable with the need for a bit of homework.
Oddly enough it was the illustration of a control description that was one of the things tweaked.
[edit: change of "has" to "have" first sentence.]

Was the spoken reference to the link also added, or had I just missed this first time? Either way, that is the excellent symbol set lists I currently use to brief newcomers, so am delighted to see people signposted to them! I can see this video being very useful as part of our promotional and recruitment activities.

Re: New Training Videos Released
All short films in the series now on YouTube - last one out today.
Final three:
with Alice Leake https://youtu.be/YVMQJOJRMyo
with Kris Jones https://youtu.be/fQOUinrE1F4
with Ralph Street https://youtu.be/R3hOMnxGXxA
Playlist (8 skills videos + trailer):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r0pQf- ... 2yIwbpWO2v
GG's Intro to the Sport: https://youtu.be/26Zc5AVkFis
Very many thanks to Katherine Bett (SN) for her skilful work editing all the films (and plenty of the camera work too.)
As in the earlier post:
If you watch a video and think it's good for our sport please consider like/share.
If you are a coach and use the videos with teenagers Sarah Brown (contact details on SLOW website at http://slow.org.uk/contactus/ ) would very much appreciate comments/feedback. Sarah can provide a downloaded version (in the unlikely event that in our technical sport you need help getting that), a pro-forma that may help with feedback, and some thoughts on usage if that would be helpful.
The better our reporting to Sport England the better for the sport.
Thanks.
