I've extracted all the events in the 2019 fixture list that are flagged as 'urban' or 'sprint'. After filtering out events registered as Local (typically midweek evening street-O) and Major (British Sprint Champs), just 28 events are left. I know there are more than this.
Just one candidate in SCOA? None in SEOA?
Anyone who's emailed asking to be included in the 2019 UK Urban League, and who's assured me that their race is flagged as Urban in the fixture list despite its absence below, please get onto their fixture secretary to get the 'urban' flag set! Selections will be made soon. (Edinburgh and Liverpool are pre-selected.)

Re: UKUL 2019
For some reason Scottish clubs always seem to be a little slower getting their events registered which ( as former SOUL coordinator) I know is a pain, but it also has the knock on effect of there being less choice for Scots in the UKUL and as a result proportionally fewer Scots undertaking serious attempts on the UKUL. Paul Caban and Lindsey Knox being notable exceptions recently.
We seem to average 2 or 3 (quite often the first 2!) but its been 3 years since we had 3 and 2 years ago one of the two was the Scottish 6 days which is of course harder to score decent points at.
Edinburgh is preselected, 2019 is a 6 day year although its not clear from the website if there is a rest day sprint or indeed whether it would be urban) but it would be great if we could have at least one other UKUL event in Scotland later in the year to encourage participation in the league north of the border. We do have I think proportionately the furthest to travel in order to make the counting 7 scores.

Re: UKUL 2019
Thanks mikey. I had a look on the 6 days website but couldn't see anything. Hadnt thought of looking there. Actually think Freefall might have mentioned that previously as sounds familiar. Its not a huge park so I'm guessing it might be an urban sprint at least for the adults but haven't heard anything.

SprintScotland, June 22-23. Triple World Ranking Event,
Probably Kirkliston and Bo'ness which are both both technically and scenically challenging.

OK, if that's how you do it...
Clyde are planning to hold an urban double-header weekend in autumn 2019, with the two venues expected to be Erskine and Linwood (the latter being a brand new area). We hope to get SOUL status for both. I understand dates should be finalised soon.

Possibly because Scotland has disproportionally (area and quality-wise) more good forest terrain than Englandshire, so forest orienteering is still more satisfying for the majority.

Re: UKUL 2019
The Springtime in Shropshire event on Saturday 25th May is in fact a Wrekin event in Shrewsbury. All 3 of the events that weekend get registered by one club although they are shared between HOC and WRE.

Re: UKUL 2019
With the ongoing review of Talent and Performance there has been a good deal of talk about how the performance side of the sport contributes to the sport as a whole and how clubs and regions contribute to the performance pathway.
Urban orienteering is a great example of an aspect of the sport that grew from initiatives developed for elite orienteering and now seems to be almost as popular as classic forest orienteering particularly amongst the older age groups.
The UKUL and regional urban leagues also provide valuable training resources for elite sprint orienteers - both maps and events.
I noticed the proposed league primarily consists of longer distance Urban races rather than the Sprint format which is the target of our elite competitors. It would be great to see more Sprint races or Sprint course options at Urban events.
Some urban races include technical terrain with clusters of higher density controls which offers good sprint training, so if planners can include information about the character of the course, numbers of controls etc it can help.
I should say that urban organisers have been very generous in providing 'all control' maps to enable informal sprint training to take place alongside urban events, which has been much appreciated.
There also seems to be a trend for providing junior courses alongside sprint and urban races where suitable off-road terrain permits - again this is a valuable resource to junior coaches and becoming increasingly popular amongst juniors - certainly in Sheffield.
There are new formats coming out of the international elite programme such as sprint relays and knock out sprints, and I'm sure our elite athletes and coaches would be happy to help introduce these if event organisers are interested.

It's mainly perception, bordering on vanity. In practice there are already plenty of options. Like this...
https://www.interlopers.routegadget.co. ... 8&course=5
Take a look, then tell me if it's a "Sprint" or a "longer urban".
just like there are also plenty of forest hard-as-we-can-make-it courses available for elites with 20-35 min winning time on 1:10k maps.

Not sure what you mean by 'perception bordering on vanity'. There seems to me to be a clear distinction between a 'Sprint' course and MOST 'Urban' courses in terms of the freqency of controls and intensity of the orienteering. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just different.
Your example looks to me like a Sprint course put on alongside an Urban event and seems to have been well used by elite orienteers training for sprint. That might not have been the intention.
Nice courses by the way - were they yours?
