Well done Helen on being appointed Major Events Consultant https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/4380, and well done British Orienteering for appointing an orienteer!

Re: Major Events Consultant
Indeed.
Although it did make me wonder about the line between paid and unpaid organisation. I assume Helen is not doing it purely for the love of it (and neither should she), but will there still be an (unpaid) coordinator for the JK? And if not, then I assume the day organisers and planners are unpaid but might still be putting in a similar amount of work?
I guess the Scots have had Colin for some time and that all seems to be working well. So please don’t take it as a criticism (it must be a good thing to have a paid person with final accountability, and similar positions have existed in the past), just a thought.

The Scottish model is that there is an event coordinator (volunteer), an assistant coordinator (professional) and many other volunteers working to make the events flow smoothly. The professional brings an element of continuity and consistency to the events and avoids the wheel being reinvented time after time after time.

"Helen Errington from maprunner"?
Good appointment.
It is a mistake to confuse effort with payment, or employment with quality.
By far the most time and effort put into UK orienteering is in training and competing. Nobody is suggesting we should be paid for it!
I feel the Scottish model is the right one - we pay for things nobody is willing to do for free at a sufficiently high standard. It requires a certain flexibility from the employees which, to date, has generally been delivered.

Re: Major Events Consultant
I thought BO had decided they no longer wanted the risk of variable returns from BOC/JK (& other major events), because they didn't have primary control of the event organisation. As a result they have been pushing clubs or regional associations to take on full financial responsibility, and imposing a higher-than-standard super-levy instead of the previous long-established profit-share arrangement.
But in return for accepting the (significant) full financial risk, clubs/associations may no longer be willing to take input from a Major Events Consultant - particularly if it involves additional expense for "improving the event". BO can't reasonably expect to remove almost all its risk, but then still want input into the event organisation.
(It may of course be that SCOA have asked for some specific help for JK19 - in which case I am sure Helen will do a good job).

But we have a new CEO and an opportunity to do things differently.

Re: Major Events Consultant
Given volunteer overload with the Scottish 6 Days I have actually found myself in the position of (paid) Coordinator for both JK2012 and BOC2018. As Jon has said I do act as the Assistant Coordinator for the Scottish 6 Days itself - there is just so much to do that it would be a big ask for a volunteer to carry out this role.
Fac et Spera. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the Scottish 6 Days Assistant Coordinator

And much of it involves meeting outside organisations, often in work time, and needing knowledge that accumulates as one person does a certain role repeatedly. Water, sewage, toilet hire, arena construction contractors, teen-age hire, council contacts, rubbish collection, police liaison, landowner and factor contact. All have similarities across all major events and so having one person doing it repeatedly results in fewer problems, hiccups etc.
