I've been reading a few final details recently, and that reminded me quite how bossy they generally tend to be:
- you MUST walk along the pavement to the start
- you MUST NOT cross the out of bounds area
- you WILL NOT be permitted into the car park after noon, or out before
- if you're late for your start we WILL NOT change your start time
- you MUST follow the officials' instructions
It goes on and on, usually over 5+ pages.
As a newcomer I would be a bit put off by all the bossiness. Even as an oldcomer I am rather put off, but I mostly put up with it because I'd quite like a run (although this balance has shifted somewhat recently).
Does it have to be this way? Can we make this stuff sound nicer? Can we just get rid of most of it? Do you care?

Re: Bossy final details
Nice thread Arnold! I have been an advocate of the: "If you read nothing else - then read this" box of succinct instructions at the top of the final details - I suspect these will be fairly blunt by their nature. Some stuff needs to be said if permissions rely on it but there are ways and ways of saying it and a humorous twist doesn't go amiss - but then not everyone can deliver the bad news with a smile on their face.
You have to get folks on your side before you start bossing them in my experience!

Come the Deeside (Aberdeenshire, that is) - we don't have long lists of do's and don'ts - but then we just aim to put on high quality enjoyable events for all.

I liked the warning in the final details for the White Rose Sprint:
Please be aware Richard III still haunts this castle and by all accounts he wasn’t a very nice person.

Re: Bossy final details
I'm a fan of final details that are very short, so yes, cut out the crap. The combination of rules and map should cover most things.
In saying that though, if there is something that is paramount to landowner permission then it possibly should go in, or be very well signposted (as it should be anyway)
These are not mutually exclusive. You can put on a high quality enjoyable event and still have poorly written final details!

Re: Bossy final details
Maybe there should be a hyperlink to RFC2119 so that people can best interpret these bosssy rules
Having said that, I tend to be bossy when writing Trail O instructions. [I do like the idea of the "this box has the most important details in it" concept though].
The reason for this is that most events we have are Ranking events (which have been used [some might say over-used] over many years for selecting our national team). I've had it when first-timers have strolled into the terrain and shouted back to their colleagues on the path what they can see - this is very distracting for the Elite competitors.
So apologies in advance for any "You MUST not enter the terrain" and "The event MUST be undertaken in strict silence" comments on any events I'll be planning in the future.

Tbh it doesn't bother me. What really gets my goat is when I see people flagrantly ignoring the requests in the fd, or just behaving badly in general. Crossing walls we were all specifically told not to cross (eg at BOC 2016), or urinating on a uni campus (jk 2017 - I emailed the organiser about that one). I worry that such things will impact on access and I note that they usually go unpunished. I can put up with bossy final details if it helps deter some of this.
End of rant!

Re: Bossy final details
I think that would have required the bossy final details to be translated into French.

I saw several youngsters leaving their only waterproofs at the clothing dump. I am amazed if the start officials then allowed them to start.

Re: Bossy final details
Some of it may come from risk assessments which too often are a cut and paste of standard hazards for which the mitigation is to advise the competitors. The problem then being that important, non standard, stuff gets lost in long lists of irrelevance.
To oblivion and beyond....
