Those w20 results are not final - there was an SI issue with Laura Kings card. Not sure what the resolution was with that.

Re: Home Internationals 2018
Are the Home Internationals still valued by competitors and Nations when Wales & Ireland are rarely if ever going to challenge England & Scotland? My only experience of an SHI as a competitor was of an enjoyable challenge but little interaction between teams, maybe that was the social that was arranged that year?

Re: Home Internationals 2018
I think it's always a great event, but more as seperate Scotland vs England and Wales vs Ireland matches. Both have become very unpredictable recently - the latter apparently coming down to 15s in the relay this year(!)
The social side varies year on year but at worst there's usually a pub nearby, and in my experience there's always plenty of chat between teams regardless of an organised social.
Keep it going!

Agreed, although the Welsh W21's beat the Scottish W21's this year which was a nice bonus for the English.
Many thanks to PFO for all the afforts they went through to make this year's event a success. Slightly disappointing that more people didn't turn up for today's public races to make it more financially worth their while.

I'm sure it is. The three Home Internationals effectively replaced the old inter-regional event at a time when there was plenty of money in the sport for "international" competitions. But times have changed. Not sure about Scotland/Wales/NI currently, but in England there is a per capita levy, via regional associations, to fund 'England' teams.
With limited money in the sport, which only seems likely to decrease further as the demographic bulge slowly drops out, how do we best spend those limited funds?
The UK international team is currently struggling for WOC funding, every year. Does it really make sense to fund home internationals ahead of WOC?

Funding from the levy that goes to EOC is much smaller than the amount the athletes pay to run for England (£95 for forthcoming VHI in South Wales).
Funding our WOC team is obviously more important, but that's not a reason to stop holding the Home Internationals, however they get funded.

I think the headline figures are misleading! EOC don't appear to publish accounts on their website, but at a guess they raise something like:
- £10,000 from say 100 representative runs (£95-£110 across all HIs & Interland)
- £ 4,500 from say 6000(?) BO members affiliated to England regions.
But a significant proportion of the former, perhaps close to 100% for juniors and at a lower level for seniors / vets, is being funded by support to selected athletes from clubs and regions, so indirectly from members or entry fees. It isn't inconceivable that orienteers in England (other than EOC selected athletes) are in aggregate contributing £7,500-£10,000, or even more, to EOC annually for Home Internationals and Interland. That sort of sum could make a significant difference to WOC or other UK teams. I don't know if similar situations arise, at a proportionately lower level, in Scotland/Wales/NI.
Over the past 30 years, since the HIs were introduced, funds available for international teams have decreased significantly but the number of events wanting support has increased significantly (annual WOCs, WC, EOC etc), so we have to prioritise. Clearly it would be great if we could fund everything. But at present, with limited funding, I think in England we have our priorities back-to-front.
If UK athletes really want members and clubs to put their limited funds towards Home Internationals in preference to WOC and other UK representative events, then no problem - the status quo will just continue. But if not, someone needs to start saying so. Then clubs, regions, and ultimately EOC could debate the issues, and if appropriate make changes!

Snail.... the SHI's were introduced long more than 30 years ago I remember being at the meeting of the old BOF International Committee in the late '70 when I suggested the introduction of the SHI's.... so almost 50 years ago...

Ah, that will be the Dolgellau Bowl. It's now awarded to the winners of the first day's (usually the Individual) competition. It took me a hell of a lot of elbow grease to rid it of the 7 years' worth of tarnish since the last time it was in English hands.
The SHI (and the JHI) provide valuable experience of International-like competition to up-and-coming athletes. The cost is very modest compared with sending athletes to World Cups and World Champs. You can argue that the VHI is poor use of scarce funds but I suspect there is very little (if any) subsidy going into this (from England at least) as the athlete contributions are higher than for the other HI's.
It would be a great shame if the Home Internationals were dropped from the calendar.
