Started today with the shortened Long Distance.
Talk about a "proper orienteering course", 16 controls on 14k for the Men:

Results here, with much bigger gaps than usual, at least on the Men's:

Don't use that map / course to promote to UK urbanites.... it'll frighten them to death Great to see a real orienteering course again

Having just watched the end of the men's race: it was entertaining, but I'm not convinced it was orienteering.

I totally agree - a really great view online and very exciting sprint finish, but not a proper navigational challenge - more of a stick with the group (most of the runners who tried to go different routes lost out due to running on their own) and then run like hell at the end.
Lets hope they never adopt this format for WOC.

“orienteering
ˌɔːrɪɛnˈtɪərɪŋ,ˌɒrɪɛnˈtɪərɪŋ/Submit
noun
a competitive sport in which runners have to find their way across rough country with the aid of a map and compass.”
Does this format find the best orienteer? I don’t think so at all.

Got to disagree, I think it's a great format with lots of new and interesting things to watch and especially different tactical situations. It will take time for people to find the best ways to win and hopefully it proves to be great for spectators.

Like not opening the map until the run through the assembly area before that last loop back into the woods.

Re: World Cup Round 3
Does anyone know if they have ever used a points race format for a tv head to head race? As i would be interested to see the results / read about how it went. By which I mean a head to head race where the first runner to each control gets 1 point, and the winner is the person at the end with the most points, rather than first to finish.

Done it in training often enough Great way to increase orienteering speed.

I'd certainly watch a televised international peg relay.

How would it work though? As we all know its not permitted to interrogate the boxes to check who's punched so how would you know what points to award....
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

Re: World Cup Round 3
But even if you find a way of awarding points to whoever gets to the control first, what’s to stop someone running behind the navigator then out sprinting them when the control comes into view? Joey H running round the majority of the pursuit with the map still rolled up should be enough for the IOF to realise that this format - and the knock out sprint, indeed any ungaffled mass start races - make a mockery of our sport.

All controls would have a live video and radio feed - they already used this technology in the race in question for some of the controls - not sure if it would need to be enhanced though for accuracy.

Actually, that's a very good question that I did spend some time thinking about in the past. The answer is that it depends on the visibility of the controls. If you can see a control from 100m away then sure, this would be a massive problem. If you can only see a control from 0.5 m away (in a pit) then that would mitigate this problem somewhat. At the extreme, you could even have invisible (hidden) controls, with the contestants only knowing that they were in the correct place when it flashed up on a wristwatch...it would take some test races to find out what worked, but even if it isn't perfect it must be an improvement on the current situation where we give them a 300m run-in to do their overtaking. Why completely disregard who gets to all the nice TD5 controls first, and then give the win to the fastest down a 300m piece of tape???
By the way I should say that I did actually enjoy watching the (mens) race despite the flaws...womens wasn't really interesting as Tove had a huge lead...as to whether it makes a mockery of the sport....look at the Omnium points race - this was live on primetime BBC in the last Olympics - a spewy format to be sure, but has it made a mockery of the Tour de France...not really.
