Re: WOC 2018 - LATVIA
Thanks for the support everyone - it was tough out there, and Alice had the run of the day for sure!
The mixed sprint relay team for tomorrow is Charlotte, Kris, Peter, Megan. It's a great team, and I'm excited to be a part of it. Ultimately, the strength of Switzerland and Sweden means that these races are often a race between 4-5 teams for the coveted last medal. Of course, lots of things can happen on the day, but we hope to be in the mix.

Re: WOC 2018 - LATVIA
Just read the WofO analysis and Kris attackpoint and the wee exchange on WofO Facebook. It’s actually pretty incredible that the mapping of the “indoor” leg was co nsidered acceptable - it feels like the mapper/controller/event adviser don’t understand the concept of simplification. As Kris himself read it - there’s an alley straight through no traps. But it isn’t. Truth is the stairs aren’t mapped adequately and for the race should have been marshalled or taped.
Have to say kudos to Kris for his response on fb where he keeps the head pretty well in circumstances where the planner or mapper is defending the indefensible
Hope Kris takes from yesterday that not only is a world medal within his grasp on the right day it’s a gold. His main unforced error came when he was pushing really hard and had climbed back up to 3rd on the course. A cruising Jones would not have made that mistake.

Andypat.... I wasn't in Riga so can't comment on the race or the map or anything.... but I can say that I've walked through that passageway hundreds of times & can't remember ever seeing / noticing the stairs.... I'm going to have a closer look next time I'm in Riga in a couple of weeks....
Good luck to all on the other side of the Daugava this afternoon. Is the TV coverage free again? Who's the 2 commentators?

The map looks ok but surely they could have closed that door?

Thanks Scott. It’s easy to see looking at that but at race pace when (crucially) you are not expecting a trap as there isn’t one on the map, it’s a split section nd right / left decision. Just really unfathomable how that was let go. Easy to map as oob and just close the bloody door. Put a Marshall there. Other than that I like it as a route - can see why they wanted to use it.

Possibly the door was closed? When you do go back make sure you approach at around 3.5 min/k for the full effect

Re: WOC 2018 - LATVIA
Interesting looking at the sprint map on LIVE orienteering.... there is a passage way through the buildings (Old Stockexchange now a Gallery) that's not on the map.

What you can't see from that photo is that, coming from the other direction, there's a flight of stairs going up, which probably does need to be shown. If, as you say, you closed the door in that photo (or put a marshal there), you could have mapped it like this:

Re: WOC 2018 - LATVIA
played it very cool, not trying to catch up too quickly and seemed to really boot it after the arena passage.
seemed some interesting hesitations on the gps 18-19 on the s option , hard to see why on the map
