A quick reminder, entry cost for Lakes 5 Days increases after 30th April - TOMORROW!
5 days of good courses are available for you to enjoy this summer.
For those already entered, many thanks but please note a change of area for Day 3. It is now Whinlatter, not Harrop Tarn. This is due to wind damage and the logistics of getting you all there. Whinlatter , like the plan for Harrop Tarn, will involve remote parking and transport but the walk in from the drop off point will be much kinder on your legs.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
The next increase in entry costs is after midnight on Sat 30th June.
People from 23 Countries have entered, US, New Zealand, Australia and Canada being the furthest away, and good contingents from Europe. No Russians yet but I assume they will be recovering after the World Cup.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Day 3 at Whinlatter will have remote parking and bussing to a drop off point near the assembly area.
There is some scope for a limited number of people to get access to closer parking and not take the bus. The organising club are collecting names of those interested in this and will use the criteria on the website to decide who to allocate spaces to.
See here for details https://www.lakes5.org.uk/2018/day-3-whinlatter
Please read the details carefully, for some it might be more attractive to take the bus.

Details of the event centre are now on the website https://www.lakes5.org.uk/2018/event-centre
Hopefully most people can collect their bibs, programmes etc from there as they travel to the area on Saturday.

Iirc they did exactly the same 4 years ago to save on yellow ink and it worked fine.
On terrain which is 100% open fell there's no possible scope for confusion so it's fine by me.

There are actually bits of white & green forest and some yellow fields on the Silver How map - but you would have to make some very sub-optimal route choices to encounter them.
The more more important thing to note (if you are used to less rugged terrain) is that only significant rock features have been mapped and cairns have not been mapped at all.

Well I'm now dry, but my kit still has a way to go...
Thanks to everyone who helped put today's event on in rather difficult conditions

Seconded.
It was a bit of a survival exercise as a competitor. It must have been awful for the helpers, particularly those stuck outdoors.
Much improved experience today though. Good decision to go ahead.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
On a different thread we talked about how often there are too many courses for the expected number of competitors (eg BOC - 27 courses for 1200 runners)
The Lakes 5 seems to have a found a good compromise - 17 courses for 1700 runners and a good spread on each: http://www.mdoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#289. Potentially you could tighten it further but it leaves you a bit of flexibility in the start list

Five days of fantastic orienteering (Perhaps day 3 a little less so!). Many thanks to all involved in putting the events on.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
I loved it all. Great event for competent reasonably fit people - not one I'd recommend for families with young children but I am amazed by the range of disabilities and decrepitude one sees getting to and from the high starts either side of their course. The helpers on the fell on Silver How deserve medals.
On another note is there any reason why all the BOF result uploads are of 1 class only and only a fraction of the competitors in most cases. Day 5 appears to be the urban event repeated.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
The IT team experienced problems uploading the results to the BO website. They think it could be due to the foreign characters in the names of overseas competitors. It could also be connected with a recent computer upgrade that happened at BO office. The absence of mobile phone coverage at most of the race sites made it difficult to contact BO office to resolve it during the week. However, rest assured that the IT team are working on it but it might take a few days to resolve as BO's developers will need to identify and help solve the problem.
