This post by Paul Street, South London Orienteers (SLOW).
A campaign is launched inviting members of the British orienteering community to contribute to the costs of GB team athletes attending the 2018 World Championships (WOC) this year in Latvia. The campaign is, as last year, via the BT MyDonate site and the charity The Orienteering Foundation (thanks to them for invaluable help.)

I hope that the On The Red Line website, which has been going three months now, has made it easier to follow the athletes. And presented our brilliant sport well. Do check back if you haven't visited recently, and perhaps remind/mention to your fellow club members.

There was an appeal last year for the World Champs in Estonia.

Last year's appeal thread here on Nopesport reached eight pages.

Re: GB WOC Team 2018 Fundraising
Not sure that this being "stickied" to stay at the top of the list actually helps. By now I have got so used to the 2017 fundraising request being at the top of the list, and not being updated, that I tend to automatically start reading at the second item. I only noticed this new thread because it wasn't initially stickied.
Perhaps better to just periodically just bump it back to the top by adding more info?

Re: GB WOC Team 2018 Fundraising
Firstly thank you very much to everyone who has donated to date - it is hugely appreciated. We are only a week in and already we've hit 20% of the target. Please do keep giving and every little helps.
Secondly the team are continuing to work hard and there are lots of good news items including a very impressive 13.45 5km from Kris Jones that puts him 7th in the 2018 UK rankings

Just giving this thread a bump. It's a week until WOC and the fundraising appeal has only raised just over half of the target.
Please consider donating some money to help the team. Just click here!

Re: GB WOC Team 2018 Fundraising
I'm just reminded that not everyone interested in the GB Team knows about the website that provides a way to "follow" them: http://www.ontheredline.org.uk
So, after being reminded, here in turn is a reminder to the Nopesport community.
Thankyou.
P.S. We are on Twitter also - and have been posting short athlete post-race interviews this week amongst the other things - but our guess is that people who use Twitter have heard about us, and have chosen to follow or not.

Re: GB WOC Team 2018 Fundraising
Summary: Thankyou.
***
As the appeal to support the athlete contributions to take part in the Latvia World Champs comes to a close, we would like to say many, many thanks for your support. The total with Gift Aid is close to the target. How wonderful. Well done British orienteers, with some international help.
The team do appreciate your interest and moral support, and will benefit from the money once the Orienteering Foundation distribute it.
As you know the athletes incur many costs to get and stay at such a competitive level
- in general for training and other competitions, and in balancing their work against their need for training and recovery. So, for example most work part-time and/or negotiate additional unpaid leave with employers. They appreciate your help, and recognise that a Charity needs a straightforward approach.
We know those who make donations like to know what happens to the money, and the Orienteering Foundation has again done fabulous service by managing thing. It is great if this activity has helped raise the Foundation's own profile - they do good stuff.
Thanks also to those who supported the team with training opportunities. And those involved with fundraising and managing the (possibly somewhat revitalised?) Squad Support Fund.

On future funding, echoing others, my own view is the whip-round has probably done its time. We can think of it as having helped buy a two-year breathing space, seeing us show well through this good year for spectating with both a European Champs and the last all-discipline World Champs.
I don't know what's next. Maybe the future is entirely individual based. The athletes each have different circumstances, and make individual plans in relation to their own priorities, covering everything I think: training, competitions, work, funding.
From my conversations (no official role, just from I see with On The Red Line ) I suggest consensus of value on one item - the support at competitions that aims for "a stress-free competition experience".
***
One further thought related to funding: there seem a couple of things that are difficult for athletes.
1. Initiating ways to "give back to the sport". The question is can the sport use the example of these young people to show orienteering's qualities - the athleticism, the requirement to think hard even when tired, to teach self-reliance and develop confidence, to inspire, to create interest, to help increase enjoyment, to increase participation. Several of the athletes do a good job of self-promotion, and we have seen the Federation News Feed providing more coverage and publicity. There is some exploration of ideas with talks / event promotion / prizegivings / juniors activities but maybe this is an area more could happen.
2. Co-ordinating dates and logistics in other than small groups, whether it be for training or competition.

P.S. On The Red Line - we have a couple of really thoughtful articles about their personal experiences at the World Champs from Alice and Megan:
