I'm interested in any rule of thumb which gives the number of cars which can be parked in a typical orienteering car park, assuming optimal conditions of flat, rectangular (dry) field, and squarish too.
I've seen figures of 150 to 170 per acre (60 to 70 per hectare) and am wondering if any car parking gurus out there can confirm this.
And what about campervans too? Is there an equivalent rule of thumb for them?

I use the figure of 27 sq m per car. This means for the S6D you need around 3 ha but preferably 4 ha to be safe. Campervans are becoming very numerous and I would say take up about 10% of vehicles now!

that's the wrong way round, and I think the numbers should be higher - 100/acre (250/ha) or more - depends how disciplined your car parking team is!

- I meant "150 to 170 per acre (400 per hectare)", of course!
But Freefall uses 10000/27 = 370 per hectare and greywolf has 250 per hectare. Big differences here ...

I did say 250 or more! it depends how close (side by side) you can get people to park - painted bays on tarmac (e.g. in a supermarket carpark) are rarely more than 2.5m wide but cars in an orienteering field are often parked at something closer to 4m centres

Re: How many cars in a field?
Of course for optimum packing your better off with people parked diagonally but I have never seen any parking team sufficiently organised to get that done. You really do need the painted lines to make it happen.
If it's tight then pre tape the lanes, separate out the longer cars from the shorter. You can get the longer ones in diagonally along the edge with some discipline which means you can have a narrower driving lane.

Parking is specified in the Scottish 6 Days Organisers manual. Rows 16 metres apart are recommended. Vehicles come in the centre between the rows (tapes) and park nose to tape either side.

Implying around 3.4m average width per car. You could probably get away with a bit less with a good parking team - and if the field is 100% usable (no ruts, boulders, marshes etc).Freefall wrote:... Perhaps for holiday events. At local events around here large campervans are still relatively unusual.Freefall wrote:Campervans are becoming very numerous and I would say take up about 10% of vehicles now!

As a campervan owner, (a VW T5), I'd like to point out that it has a smaller footprint than a BMW X5, that everybody recognises as a car. The 'problem' vehicles are Motorhomes, which are larger things and do need more space to manoeuvre.

Crawford is correct - there is a difference between motorhomes and campervans which along with dogs, toilet paper and lack of water are the main stress points for major events.

Campervans based on VW Transporter/Transit type chassis are designated as large cars on ferries. The real problems are caused by the huge Winnebago type mobile home that has the size of an HGV and the off-road ability of a jumbo-jet. Some are so large they cannot fit through gates to parking fields...
