To make orienteering more interesting for spectators and media, the IOF has today issued new clothing rules for World Rankig Events and Championships, under the headline of “less is more”.
For ladies, the new rules prescribe bikini bottoms and tops; for men, a naked torso will be required. An example is shown here:
Detailed rules are being worked on at the moment and will be published in time for EOC in early May. The IOF hopes to achieve a higher resonance with the media to further progress towards its Olympic dream - what works for beach volleyball, athletics and swimming should also help orienteering. “Some people may think this is superficial and out-of-date, but the fact is: spectators want to see some flesh”, comments the IOF in its communication to national federations.
In effect this is only the logical next step in the evolution of orienteering clothing from the full body, pyjama-type outfits of yesteryear to today’s ever more tight-fitting tops and bottoms.
In addition to the rules themselves, the IOF is also working on other details such as whether gaiters are allowed, below which temperatures “winter rules” (such as adding a santa hat) could apply, and where bibs would be attached in future.
