Re: UKOL Midlands Weekend 17/18 March 2018
Due to the recent spell of wet weather the car parking arrangements for Midlands Champs 2018 at Belvoir Castle (this Sunday 18th March) have been changed.
Please check the LEI website for updates http://www.leioc.org.uk/
As a result there will now be more room along the finish run-in and in light of the predicted cold weather some competitors may wish to bring along their clubs tents for shelter/bag storage.

Apparently the distances to the starts and finish have only been extended by 500m, not 2km as implied by the announcement. See clarification on the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/leioc

That's not how I read the statement on the LEI website (and e mail):
Parking on the estate roads. There are two walking routes from this car parking area. Both start by returning along the access road for about 250 m. There is then a choice of two routes.
One to the left goes direct to start S2 along a flat metalled road and is a 15 minute walk. This route does not go via the arena. The distance from Start S2 back to the arena is a 15 minute, uphill walk.
The route to the right goes to the arena and start S1. The arena is a 25 minute walk, mainly gently uphill along a metalled road. Please be aware of traffic.
I understand that the majority will be parked on the estate roads and that it is a 25 minute walk to the arena. It is then another 1.5km to S1 (used by all the longer courses). There is an option to go straight to S2 without going via the arena but this option isn't mentioned for S1.
The mixture of walking times and actual distances doesn't help but I'm assuming it could be a total of 4km to S1. Unless someone from LEI can clarify?
I hope it's not an academic point and the snow doesn't put paid to the event altogether.

Agreed, which is why I asked the question on Facebook where they appeared to confirm it had been extended TO 2km not BY 2km, but contradicted by the 25 minute walk in the latest update. Anyway a moot point now!

Following the unfortunate cancellation of the Midlands Championships last weekend at Belvoir Castle Estate, competitors unused maps will be available for collection at the forthcoming JK weekend.
Anyone who entered, may if they wish, collect their printed course map from the LEI Club Tent on Days 2 and 3 of the JK at Cannock Chase. If you are not attending the JK but still wish to receive your map, ask a fellow club member to pick this up on your behalf.

Is this the best thing to do ? If the maps were retained, the event could be put on sometime in the future without needing to be re-planned.

The Belvoir Castle Estate has a number of events (non orienteering) scheduled in their calendar, which combined with fitting a level A event into the current BOF schedule makes this difficult to find suitable dates. Parts of the estate are actively managed (some areas were being felled while controls were being set out the day before the event) and this together with seasonal changes mean that the area would require further map adjustments and reprinting in any instance.
