I'm actually totally with you on the "scale inflation" / overmapping issue - the last few years' middle champs are good examples.
However, I also think it's a bit strange to insist on 1:15 for two races per year (JK and BOC) when there are no (few) others throughout the year, meaning you can't even train for it properly. And I am yet to find anyone who prefers 1:15 so why insist?

`tradition - and as was stated somewhere (can't find where) "you don't f**k with tradition"

What's changed since then? Did we have better eyesight in the 80s
I still have many of those maps, and typically they are easier to read than current 1:15000 versions of the same areas. I think the print quality has not improved, and more care was taken about the gaps between symbols...
When there isn't quite enough room to fit things in modern mappers insist on ISOM for symbol sizes and violate ISOM for minimum separations, the older maps went for a optimal compromise.
Jon is right about modern maps (usually) being more accurate, I can now understand some of my 1980s errors

I actually look forward to the few times a year when I can run on offset-litho printed 1:15,000 maps at the major events - the maps are often easier to read than 1:10,000 maps on many other events! I think the printing does make a big difference.

Re: JK2018
Offset-litho printing still gives a better product than 99.(% of laser printers - its down to how the technology works. In offset-litho each colour is printed as lines, shapes etc while laser printers work with mixing dots of 4 different colours of ink, so they cannot ever be as crisp as lines printed in one colour.

A good example of this was BOC 2005 on Penhale. The 1:15000 offset litho map was easier to read than the 1:10000 we had for the relay on the same area the next day.

A good example of this was BOC 2005 on Penhale. The 1:15000 ortho map was easier to read than the 1:10000 we had for the relay on the same area the next day.
Not sure you mean "ortho map" - a different animal entirely

Re: JK2018
2,546 JK entries by the closing date - seems lower than previous years despite what looks like a great programme of racing.
Does anyone know if it actually is lower, and if so if that's a trend or a one-off, maybe caused by the early Easter?

Re: JK2018
We had 3043 in South Wales for JK 2014, some 2430 from GBR, the remaining 613 coming from 22 different countries.
A quick look at the overseas entries for 2018 suggests that the overseas entries this time are around a third of the 2014 numbers ...
PS Edited to negate denbydale's comment

I see the latest Bulletin says:
but I can't see them on the SI Entries site, or even a column where they'd be displayed.
Bib numbers will be displayed on the SiEntries entry list from 5th March.

Anyone know when the JK Sprint prize giving is planned for? Not that I'm hopeful myself but Micro Buzz is in with a shot!
