Picutres of original O ink stamps
I am putting together a 50th anniversary issue of the BKO newsletter and there will be a brief mention of ink stamps. I never used them (most people won't have!) and I was therefore thinking of including a picture - preferably, but not necessarily, of one being used by an orienteer. This must be going back about 40 years. Anyone got a suitable image that I could use? I have noticed that there is one in the final anniversary issue of Focus credited to 'J. Talyor'. Thanks.

I've never used one and I started in 1970.

I used them at my first event in 1969
There are a couple of pictures of them (almost) in use in John Disley's 1967 book 'Orienteering', price 12 shillings (net).

SOC have a set that Jerry Newcombe had. Think they are in our club store if you are interested! PM me.

I used them in 1967 but surprised to see this one, if that is what it is - there is a conventional pin punch too.

So it is ! Never occurred to me that it was necessary to illuminate a control (even for night-o). But as I said, military area - a few feet from the top of a hill, and trig point ! Misled by the pink colour and 40 odd years.

Do coloured crayons post or pre date ink stamps? Remember using crayons in an event in Ukraine (with control cards hand made from cereal boxes!) in about 1998.

According to early orienteering literature, competitors (or officials), were expected to write a code on their control card that was displayed on the flag. Self-inking stamps were an obvious improvement! Night controls also had a reflective strip on them.

1960-65 picture here: http://www.orienteering-history.info/apunching.php. From Czechoslovakia, and not in great detail, but perhaps similar to UK.
