Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
Scottish Orienteering (with some approval from British Orienteering) is considering submitting an application to stage SWOC 2022 in the City of Edinburgh. I am seeking quality images of our GB athletes, preferably in team kit and in a sprint environment, for use in the glossy brochure. Though early days I am also interested to hear from anyone who might like to get involved as a member of the delivery team. Email is colin.matheson@scottish-orienteering.org. After WOC2015 did I ever think it would happen again? The split between forest and urban orienteering has made this a realistic possibility and we have full support from Event Scotland and Edinburgh City Council. There will also be an "Edinburgh 5 Days" or similar to support WOC.

I think this is a fantastic idea and I really hope it goes ahead. Well done to whoever came up with it!

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
Wales, through a British Orienteering bid, missed out on the 2020 World Masters Orienteering Champs. There has been some background work on a possible re-bid for 2022 or 2024 so while very supportive of a bid for the Sprint World Champs from Scotland please keep in contact with Wales and British orienteering as I guess only one bid is likely to have a chance of success. Wales has not forgotten that the North West might be staging a 2022 Lakes 5 day also and nothing would be progressed without the support of NWOA should they feel it has a detrimental effect on them.

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
It is disappointing that the lack of leadership from BO means SOA has had to push this pretty well unilaterally.
In the death throes of the current format, IOF were offering a free WMOC to compensate for WOC, (e.g. Italy, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia) so a more joined up GB approach might have benefitted a WMOC from bid Wales of England. I think GB is the only host of current-format-WOC not to get a WMOC as part of the deal.
I guess we'll find out soon whether Sprint WOC hosting is so competitive they don't need sweeteners.

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
The IOF (through Tom Hollowell) confirmed there is no issue with two UK bids being submitted for two events in the same year. Again Tom confirmed this has been done before and would not weaken or dilute any of the bids.
Submissions for WMOC2022 will not be due till March 2019 so it will be clear as to whether there is a clear run or whether WOC2022 will need to be factored into the bid process.
SOA should be in a position (through the Scottish Orienteering 6 Day Event Co) to submit a strong bid. At present we do not know of other Federations seeking to submit bids.

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
As far as I can see in the IOF council minutes the Russians are interested in 2022
Also from the minutes you get a chance to roll your (unsuccessful) bid to the next opportunity (if you so wish) without any further charges.

Eddie - thanks for that. Interesting to see potential competition has already met with IOF! We haven't gone as far as that yet.

I doubt they've met the IOF. What's probably happened is that the IOF noted the interest of the Russians from a feedback survey to all Federations seeking interest in future bids for major IOF events.

From the IOF council minutes
LH had represented the IOF at
• A meeting with the Russian OF President and the Governor of Vladimir
Region in Russia 26-28.10.2017, regarding a potential application for the
Sprint WOC 2022.

Have you checked whether your WOC 2015 planners/organisers have recovered sufficiently yet or are you counting on another 4 years being enough time for them to have forgotten the traumas ?

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
Neither of the WOC2015 Sprint Planners has come forward just yet begging for another chance but we are open to offers We are receiving help from others who were involved with WOC in terms of maps, provisional courses and areas. Unfortunately Livingston doesn't quite tick all the boxes for one of the world's most iconic cities despite the high quality of orienteering on offer.

They probably don't know about it. This post is the first ESOC knew about this and considering we are one of the main clubs of Edinburgh surely we should have known before it being made public.

Don't see why any club should know, assume it's the SOA making the bid, not the local clubs.

Re: Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2022
I wasn't sure if we should publicise things but the IOF Guidelines for Organisers of World Orienteering Championships states "place relevant information on the national Federation's website no later than the final date for receipt of applications by IOF". This means that we will have to request that BOF add something but we still have a few hoops to go through in the very near future before we decide to proceed or not.
