In several threads on Nopesport the question of 'fairness' is raised. My personal gripe at unfairness is that over many years of orienteering, I must have wasted an awful lot of time trying to find the Start triangle when I start a race on an area I am unfamiliar with (I travel a lot, so there are a lot of such). It occurs to me that if a map is displayed in the Start lane, why can't it show the position of the Start triangle? People who have run on the area, or worse on the map, before gain an unfair advantage on those of us who don't know the area. On a large map it can take a significant pause before you locate where you are and can actually start.
Is there any good read reason why the Start triangle should not be part of the pre-view of the map?

Agreed, that would be an excellent idea. How many times have we all had to find a low number and then work back until we find the Start Triangle ? It's supposed to be a navigational challenge, not a "find the Start" challenge.

Oh but trying to guess the start location in the 40 seconds you have with the blank map is so much FUN though

Incidentally why do so many clubs put blank maps in the start lanes? The only reason for doing this is to draw a competitor's attention to a late change or an unusual situation.

To disadvantage people like Dustytoo who can't work out where the start is!

Re: Preview of Start triangles
Sounds sensible.
A variation on this that we saw at O Cerdagna is Spain this year was to mark the starting grid where people are in the start lanes. Only on one day of 5 though and not quite in the right place. The actual start was a good distance away, so far that some who saw it thought it was a course control.

Absolutely! It's rarely done outside the UK and just adds one more item to the list of things the organising club has to do

Why not?
It at least gives new people to an area/map a chance to familiarise themselves with the map before starting thus offsetting a little of the advantage people who have run on the map/area before have.
Hardly an onerous task when setting up the start.

Can argue with the rules, but not the clubs that stick to them!

Re: Preview of Start triangles
I remember trying to find the start triangle of the long score at OMM2010 on Dartmoor being a majorly difficult task. A 1h 'mystery' bus transfer (i.e. fell asleep), not being able to 'trace back' along the course and hiding the start triangle amongst a load of oob hatching added to the challenge

Re: Preview of Start triangles
Plenty of better ways to display a map before the start line. Online, at assembly/registration etc.

Note the word "should" in Rule 28.4 ... it doesn't say "must".

Basically, 12.24 is an anomaly which is peculiar to BOF Rules.
There is no equivalent in IOF Rules nor, I would suggest, in many (any?) other Federation's rules.
