London City Race Weekend
Thanks to all at SLOW for the events at Wapping and City of London. Up to the usual standard of organisation and planning - always enjoyable to attend the event. Already looking forward to next year.

Agere with Ian and Monika. Still need to work hard on my route choices in the Barbican, but an excellent challenge set by Ed Catmur.

I agree - and thanks to LOK for today's ultrasprint too. The first time I'd tried one of these, it was great fun.

Re: London City Race Weekend
Agree an excellent weekend, as usual.
Having looked at splits and routegadget, I'm a bit put out that the most significant of the Barbican legs on course 9 was entirely dependent on how well you remembered one of the surprise map corrections in the start lanes. All the fast times used the map correction - I didn't remember it well enough to even realise it was an option.
Was this really fair ? Was it the best way to handle it ?
An alternative approach might have been to red tape/sign/marshal the ground, and no-one would have looked there anyway.

I presume you're talking about leg 10-11, and using the underpass to exit from 10. If you miss the underpass, you can run essentially the same route by going up the steps NE of the control and then immediately down the steps leading NW. (I had the same control, but a different leg, and also forgot about the underpass, so that's what I did.) Certainly a little slower, but probably not a huge difference over the whole race. But I tend to agree that treating it as OOB may have been fairer.

Re: London City Race Weekend
If it is that leg, then even if you forgot the map correction underpass, there is still the mapped underpass a few yards to the west which only adds a few seconds. So not sure it is reasonable to claim that it ".. was entirely dependent on how well you remembered the surprise map corrections"

Re: London City Race Weekend
In general, I am not a great fan of map corrections being given out on the start line - there are better ways of doing it ...... At this event, I remember being given some info re corrections at the start, but have no recollection of anything being said about a change which would affect route choice from #10-#11 on Course 9. Can anyone remind me exactly what was said about this? (Incidentally I made a total cock up of this leg!)

Re: London City Race Weekend
The peculiar thing about this map correction near 196 is that it may well be on version of the map used on RG: the curb lines are drawn and there seem be (some sort of) underpass marks beneath the canopy which would correspond with the direction of the entrance.

A really good weeked, really enjoyed it. It is always nice to visit London, and get to see as many sites as possible. The multi-layer barbican at the end was just cruel, especially when you were tired.
1 positive & 1 negative comment
Positive - Good locations, often "city" races are held on the outskirts of the city. Good to be right in the centre running along the Thames etc.
Negative - Controls just hanging by the gripple wire, this added time when punching as i had to grab, lift, rotate, punch. Ideally on a stake, or secured firmly in something with number showing.
Thanks again,

Surely that is the same for all?

Not with mixed punching!

I was very glad I had decided to hire a SIAC card as it certainly saved me considerable time at 2 controls. Both of these were on some greenery (shrub/tree) in raised beds and, not on the edge of them. At one of them an elderly lady was struggling, and as someone who also has difficulty climbing walls etc, I was very relieved to (just) be able to get close enough by stretching on tiptoe and leaning right over, to be able to register a beep at the control. Overall, certainly saved me some time compared to conventional punching.

Re: London City Race Weekend
I made a formal complaint about the use of mixed punching before this event.... If you saved 'significant' time at controls in excess of the 1-2 seconds the organisers promised then my complaint of losing considerable time as a result of not paying the 'ecxess' for SIAC should be upheld.
I offered to pay £20 to gain 10 minutes, which was their equivalent gain!
There is no way SIAC does not give an advantage and therefore mixed punching should not be used as per BO rules.

Can work the other way at non-SIAC urban events where gripples are used as it's often very difficult to get the larger SIAC punch into the SI unit hole with a gripple cable. So time lost there - happened at the last SYO urban event.
