This post by Paul Street, South London Orienteers (SLOW), or “Ralph's Dad” as he is more widely known.
As posted by housewife and GG in the World Cup Round 1 thread there is a fund-raising campaign for our GB WOC Team to get them to Estonia in July. The need to fund-raise has come about due to the changes to central funding from bodies such as Sport England which has already been discussed in other threads on NopeSport.
The minutes from BOF's February Board meeting include the following:
It was recognised that the performance programme needs to move to a position of self-funding by athletes. It was also recognised that to thoroughly prepare for WOC, athletes need to race at selection races and World Cup races, to gain ranking points, and attend training camps and competition in terrain appropriate to WOC. This leads to the contradiction that if our top athletes work full time to provide the funds to attend these opportunities, they compromise their training and recovery strategies. If they choose to work part time so they can train and recover optimally, they have limited funds to pay for the essential travel and competition fees.
The result of this has been that economies have been made e.g. there was no manager with the team at the recent World Cup Round and there are significant increases in the individual athlete contributions for each competition. For the World Champs next month for example it will be about £500. This goes towards travel, accommodation, entry fees and car hire. (Some fees may seem high but are what they are e.g. entry fees are 90 EUR for Middle and Long, 120 EUR for Sprint, 215 EUR for a relay team, plus 120 EUR accreditation fee per athlete.) Of course most costs have also been hit by the decline in sterling.
The team has setup a 'My Donate' page. Money donated goes to the Orienteering Foundation, which is a well-established charity, and which has agreed its support on the athletes' behalf. Money donated can attract gift aid, can be anonymous, can carry an encouraging message (yes please), and in addition it will be accounted for in end of year accounts so donors can get good feedback.

Re: GB WOC Team Funding Appeal
For interest, what's the difference between an athlete licence and accreditation? Do you now need a licence to orienteer? Do you get points on it for drunken orienteering?
Anyway, looking at some of the costs, IOF (I presume they set the fees more than the organisers) are having a laff, although £5 per training map seems excessive.

http://woc2017.ee/trainings/ says
Printed clean maps: 4 EUR/pc
Printed maps with permanent controls: 5 EUR/pc
whereas in 2015 printed training maps were £4.50 (blank) and £5.50 (with controls)... I never got an answer as to how much of that (if any) was passed on to the clubs who provided the maps

Accreditation is a mystery fee for the organisers, Licence is a mystery fee for IOF.
Even the Trail-O team need racing licences.

Yes we do, and there is only ever one IOF event a year (WTOC) for which we need it, unlike FootO, where it is needed for the World Cup races as well.
But they charge us all the same fee - €30. Its a sore point.

We received £1.00 per map, but for us that was a grand total of £18.00.

The IOF Licence fee goes directly to the IOF Anti-Doping fund. Yes, even TrailO competitors are tested.

I stand corrected, and maybe it's even worth it. The IOF just announced the ban of a ski-orienteer for Meldonium use. Guess their nationality....

I'm presuming the increased fee for the sprint (£90) compared to the forest races (£75) is due to infrastructure required. But given the sprint has qualifiers surely they're bringing in more entry fees anyway?
