Re: Double Dukes Weekend - 1st/2nd April
I just couldn't comprehend that the terrain went up (a long way!) off the map NE of 12, rather than down. No water left at the car park between 19 and 20. An ingloriously memorable day.

My memory of 1988 was being up to my armpits in freezing water, a few days before the event with Gareth B-J, trying to manoeuvre some scaffolding into position for a bridge between 4 and 5

Indeed we are... although I may now need to extend the Black course from it's current 8km if someone like Öyvin turns up...
I think Oyvin is a wee bit slower these days... Mind you Thierry might come along for some fun and then your winning time will be out the window

Re: Double Dukes Weekend - 1st/2nd April
Could part of the reason why recent events had a longer winning time be the extra number of controls?
If you look at the WC course there were "only" 25 controls which means you can run around quite a bit eg 19-20 so it's not quite so physical
I haven't seen a recent course but in general the planning philosophy seems to now be "keep them off paths at all times" / "nothing must ever be easy" so a similar course would nowadays have 35 controls not 25?

The last time it was used (in 2013) the Black course had 28 controls https://routegadget.fvo.org.uk/rg2/index.php#32&course=1
and the time before (in 2010) when it was a WRE, M21E had 30

Re: Double Dukes Weekend - 1st/2nd April
...which rather proves the point:
1988 12.5k/25c = 500m per control
2010 10.6k/30c = 350m per control
2013 9.8k/28c = 350m per control
1988 12.5k/25c = 500m per control
2010 10.6k/30c = 350m per control
2013 9.8k/28c = 350m per control

The one definite thing i can remember is being upset that once the WC race was over, there was no water for the rest of us despite the drinks point being marked on the map. I remember finishing but remarkably little else.

The day was warm, I'd been helping since 08:30 my start was after 14:00 -- no water at the drinks point was a heavy blow! And, to be honest, my technique wasn't good enough on this tremendous area.

Re: Double Dukes Weekend - 1st/2nd April
Just a reminder that entries for both the middle race on Saturday and the SOL on Sunday close this Sunday (26th) March. Looks like it's going to be a great weekend and just in time for some last minute practice before the JK

Superb results service. Just what's needed by those of us trying to meet Monday-morning press deadlines and for publicizing results on club web site & social media. Well done to all involved in what sounds like a superb weekend.

Re: Double Dukes Weekend - 1st/2nd April
Was a really good event.
You can tell its tough when three different people ask you for directions in the first 2 controls!
TD 5 courses were really physical with an excellent long leg on mine (short blue)
All the TD4- courses looked really tough apart possibly from white!
