No need to make a trip, just compare Bing Maps - https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=4b120124-d8b8-405a-aae4-2405fd72033b&cp=50.415423~-4.01624&lvl=15&style=h&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027
with Google Maps - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.4152536,-4.0162278,2498m/data=!3m1!1e3

Plenty of competition for that honour - the 1991 JWOC long distance crossed where the Berlin Wall used to be between the last control and the finish. (The old map showed said wall as two uncrossable fences with out of bounds on the far side).
There also used to be a parkland map where Australia's Parliament House now stands.

Actually you get a zoomed-in scale as SHI Individual had 1:10k when it should in theory have been 1:15k. The Relay and the longer WL races also had 1:10k with shorter courses having 1:7.5k.
I heard no complaints from anyone about the scales, but it does beg the question of what sort area Newborough would be were it mapped for 1:15k use, with 5m contours. Sure it would lose a lot of detail - but it would it still be one of our more technical areas?
The map this year was IMO a lot better than the previous one in terms of contour features, but the veg was changing too rapidly to re-map so wasn't ideal in places.

I'd say Newborough as well. Not the most complex area out there (I think parts of Lossie have that), but the map has pretty poor readability. The lack of index contours contributes to this IMO

They were taken off the 1:5k version we used for the British TrailO (almost certainly an improvement) and then, as you say, also off the SHI w/e maps (which was almost certainly a mistake).
I don't recall the reason why I'm afraid, but I think it was to do with the previous map having a lot of inconsistency of when single rings were used with the index and sometimes with a normal contour (which ISOM allows for clarity). Whatever the reason was, I don't think it was a good idea so sorry about that - I'm sure they'll be back on next time.
Cheers

Re: Most Technical Areas in UK
Sounds like some fun areas to investigate... I only got to run at Newburgh once when I was a junior, maybe at a British Champs (early 90's ??) and I did find it pretty tough.
Real shame about Wheal Florence... looks like it was a fun wee area but the google streetview now looks horrendous!
