I was mulling over recent orienteering events held in Aberdeenshire for the Deeside Night Cup and it got met thinking... What is the most technical orienteering area in the UK?
The recent DNC race at Forvie which I had a hand in planning certainly challenged all my experience when out marking the control sites, the map is LIDAR based so shows a lot of detail, the mapper's interpretation of the ground for me was spot on. I found it hard but manageable.
I did think it would have been a whole different prospect at race speed in the dark though http://www.gramp.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#171&course=1
I tried to race a couple of weeks later at MAROC's DNC event at Muir of Dinnet http://www.maroc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#213&course=1and found the night navigation a whole lot more difficult. The area has very subtle features which at speed (or later on the course, oxygen debt) I was left floundering around trying to piece.
So what makes an area tricky? Where do you think the most technical areas are in the UK? It would be fun to gauge opinion and see some routegadget links

I'm going to be annoying and not answer in the UK but internationally Lunsen nr Uppsala has to take the win here.

There are bits of Newborough where i epically fail each time I run there.

At least you can run in any direction you want there - neither the terrain nor the rock stops you from doing so. Whereas here at Le Guilhaumard (French 5-days 2016)
you are forced off line, and very easily completely lost.
Certainly the most technically challenging orienteering I did in 2016, and perhaps ever.

Nice Martin. Very nice!
Back on topic i'm going to go for the Trossachs (probably to a lot of laughter). The physicality of the place makes it technically tough (i'm probably still not answering the question)

I would agree with the Trossachs but any TD5 area can be the ultimate challenge dependent on the planning. The last time I ran at The Trossachs half my course was between the start and control 1, an amazing 2.5K leg.

Trossachs is technically pretty simple I'd reckon Docharn is (was) much more technical

I 2nd Newborough. You pick up the map and think you've been accidentally been given a shrunken scale.

Leith Hill was fairly hardcore last year - got confused even though I'd planned on it previously.
For me it often depends on the map - sometimes it just all makes sense even if it is really technical, say roseisle. And sometimes it's not that technical but I still can't really figure it out.
I do love technical and runnable though, generally any sand-dune area will do, or the flat bit of Bigland. If you basically have to walk to make sense of it (like on some of that French terrain) there's not much point for me.

I understand there is not much to go on in this SOLWAY area.

Best thing about Muir of Dinnet is that much is natural or semi-natural tree growth so visibility varies a lot in white forest. Makes things much trickier than in a plantation type forest where the visibility is the same through blocks. Variety of terrain type (moraine, water eroded gullies, steep slopes, rocky areas, all combine to provide a great challenge to orienteers.
Maybe a high profile event here sometime... if we can sweet talk SNH.
