Shane Ohly and his Ourea events team has launched a British Mountain Marathon series and Mountain Marathon championship: http://www.mountainmarathon.com/brit...onship-launch/
The series includes Dark Mountains, LAMM and ROC (previously RAB), with best 2 scores to count.
ROC will also be the 'British Mountain Marathon Championships'
Be interesting to see how the series goes, as competition at the sharp end/longer courses of MMs has decreased a bit in the last decade.
As for the Championship race, I'm not so sure. For me when it comes to MMs the KIMM/OMM will always be the one to win (with LAMM and Saunders Klets carrying kudos but not as much as the OMM).

Re: MM series
Out of interest, what is the governing body that is endorsing this as a British Championship?

The only interest I have seen for Mountain (or Ultra) Orienteering was in the late 90s when the IOF (1 year after an unofficial International Marathon-Orienteering Trophy of which the Ardgour LAMM was a counting event) designated events for 3 years as "World Trophy" races. Mark Seddon was GBR's representative on the committee as I recall.
[I think these years are correct]
1998 Raid IGN Francital (France)
1999 Best 2 of 3: Raid IGN Francital (France), Slovenian 2 day LongO and World Rogaining Champs (NZL)
2000 Checkpoint Marathon Orienteering Trophy (ESP)
As there wasn't a significant takeup the World Trophy didn't progress to World Champs.

World Rogaining Champs in NZL was early/mid-January 2000, shortly after WMOC

Is it cynical of me to think that a business has just created a British MM Championship?

Re: MM series
Why can't a person or organisation set up something called a Championship if they identify what they feel is a gap in the market?
Why do orienteers feel they have a monopoly on anything that involves running with a map?
Look at the results on most or all MM and you'll see that there are many names that don't feature on "proper orienteering" results. This tells me there are people out there who seek something a bit different to what we usually offer. Or dare I say it, even the inclusion of the O word might be putting them off due to their perception of the sport - something we all need to work on.
Good luck to Shane and the team.

Looks like I looked at the wrong trophy

From what I can see a business or set of businesses has done that.
My personal thoughts
* None of the 3 most established and longest running MMs are included (KIMM/OMM, SLMM, MMM). Whilst you may argue that the SLMM is confusing in that the Elite is split into solo and pairs, and the Mournes has never had the same strength in depth as some of the others, it'd probably be harder to argue against the KIMM/OMM being the most prestigious, and hence worthy of inclusion.
* Apart from the IOF's attempts that I mentioned above there doesn't seem to be any interest by an NGB so it isn't as if they are stepping on anyone's toes.
* There is nothing to stop anyone calling any event a championship if they want. USA have a "World Series" after all; and the boxing and darts worlds have multiple contenders. To get any legitimacy OTOH then it'd need to have backing IMO of an NGB such as BOF.
* Mountain Marathons don't tend to come under BOF rules do they? Once upon a time I think they might have been registered as BOF events and appeared in the BFO calendar (the Capricorn certainly was), but I don't think they are now. IOF discussed Marathon-Orienteering and Mountain-Orienteering.
JK (never done a Dark Mountains, or a Rab, but has done more SLMMs, KIMM/OMMs, LAMMs and MMMs than you can shake a Sup-Air pole at)

Nope, its just stating the obvious. Its what happens to sports which don't have governing bodies. What would be cynical would be to think it was a bad thing.
As far as I can tell, they aren't making any money directly from it. Rather they invented a brand to promote the races as a series and perhaps market to sponsors.
More cynical would be to invent something like CityRace EuroTour just to promote one race like RaceTheCastles, with no intention of making any long term effort. Then claim the credit when the thing went from strength to strength http://cityracetour.org/ .

Re: MM series
Really JK, a scientist should do his research, or have you joined Mr Trumps alternative facts team? ;
Origin of the World Series name;
For many years, it was believed that the name came from the fact that the original series was sponsored by the New York World Telegram newspaper, thus becoming known as the ‘World’s Series’. However, popular as this explanation may be, it’s not actually true and although the newspaper did report the results of the games, it had nothing to do with the naming of the competition.
The real reason behind the name is thanks to Barney Dreyfuss who was the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1903, he wrote to the owner of the Boston Red Sox challenging them to a ‘World’s Championship Series’. The Pirates were the best team in the National League and the Red Sox were the best in the American League.
The games went ahead and Boston won the series five games to three. Over time, the 'World’s Championship Series' name has been shortened to the World Series and has been played every year apart from 1904 and 1994.

The fact I quoted was that USA hold a "World Series" - is that an alternative truth ?

OK, you win. But the implication was there that the Americans call it a world series despite only US teams taking part...

"winning" and "holding" are not the same thing.
In any case, putting aside for one moment the origins of the term and using my more naiive interpretation of "World Series", do 2 nations a "World" make?
But yes feel free to replace "USA" with "North America" in my original statement.

You are entirely correct in the implications I was making which weren't totally founded.
