Re: SIAC touch free
Fair enough then, if made available to those who want to use one / borrow one at 'reasonable' cost/ nominal fee... But what if only limited to a certain number (figure unknown), so not even available to later entrants who want one? (as at forthcoming event), this must be unfair as the rules suggest re. mixed punching.

Unless you are having a near100% perfect run it makes no odds.... same as with fast or slow compass.

Re: SIAC touch free
There will be enough SIACs for any JK2017 competitor that wants to hire one to do so.
At smaller SIAir events there may (almost certainly will) not be enough hire SIAC cards for everyone - although of course people have the option of buying one in advance. Clearly there are some that consider this an intolerable unfairness, but that is what we are going to see more and more of next year.

Fairness or not, do any of the people posting on here supporting SIAir stand to benefit financially from this ?
(SportIdent will of course be making a significant profit from all these new cards.)

I'm more than happy to state that neither myself or my club will benefit financially from SIAir - (except of course from increased participation due to the greater competitor experience that it will offer). I do though admit to believing that evolution works best by small incremental steps.
I have no idea how much money Sportident will make from decisions being made concerning SIAir. Probably less than you imagine.
I also have no idea what effect it will have on other companies that I gather have been lobbying BOF not to allow mixed punching at events.

Re: SIAC touch free
Two years ago I won M60 at the JK sprint but had I run 2 seconds slower I would have been 3rd... so the idea that it doesn't make a crucial difference is a nonsense. Of course I'll be hiring one next year but that doesn't mean I won't feel great resentment against the capitalists ripping me off AND against BOF and the event organisers for facilitating this. Their job is to protect members from the lobbyists not to give in to them.

And of course your run was perfect & you didn't miss any controls or weren't running at 100%.....

From that point of view, SIAir isn't really any different to standard EMIT - in both cases the vast majority of members will currently have to pay extra to hire a card when they're used at major events.
The only difference is that with SIAir many people will have the option of saving a few quid and using their own SI card if they're not bothered about missing out on contactless punching, whereas with EMIT most people will have to pay to hire a card whether they like it or not.

At the Didcot event on Monday, 129 out of 225 competitors entered so far have their own EMIT brikkes, so those hiring are not the "vast majority". Of those with their own brikke, some of these are from clubs/regions that use EMIT as default, but some (e.g. me) are not.
Curiously, over a quarter of those who are down to hire a brikke are from TVOC, the organising club.

I don't mind hiring an emit. I have not spent any money buying a brick. What riles me and many others is the way that SI are making obsolete the equipment that we have bought off them - for no discernable improvement.

That's because the runners at Didcot will come disproportionately from other EMIT-using SCOA clubs, and so are much more likely to have purchased their own EMIT card than people living in other regions.
My post said "at major events", where the level of EMIT card ownership looks very different. I can't find the exact numbers for how many hire cards we ended up giving out at JK2013, but I believe it was comfortably over two-thirds of the total number of competitors - hence the "vast majority" being compelled to hire a card.

Re: SIAC touch free
OK, describe me as sad but....
The proportion of non-EMIT-club members at Didcot hiring brikkes is 38/96 = 40%.
The proportion of EMIT-club (SCOA + OD) members hiring brikkes is 57/129 = 44%.
The numbers are changing as I type, as the entries are gently increasing.
Nevertheless, I think that my conclusion is that people entering Didcot are keener than your average and have their own EMIT brikkes, even if they are not from a club whose preferred system is EMIT.
Apologies for any errors in the sums.

Re: SIAC touch free
As a matter of interest what discussions have there been in EMIT clubs about contactless punching? EMIT have had systems in place for many years and the most recent emiTag one seems very good, I've used it a few times and really enjoyed the experience.
As far as I'm aware no club has upgraded to this system. Is this because it is felt that there is not sufficient demand for contactless yet or because there are doubts about the technology (reliability/logistics/running costs etc) or because it would involve replacing a club's entire stock of both units and brikkes?
What will happen I wonder when SI clubs go contactless. Will that be the nudge needed to upgrade (or jump ships) or keep waiting until EMIT develop something that is at least partially backwards compatible?

Is that the emit system that was used oh so memorably at the BSBM weekend 2015? Why change from the current emit system to something more expensive and less reliable?
