They probably were. Not sure how you know, or are the air controls just at big events and highly publicised? Are they completely different SI units?

although there was one unfortunate incident when one of the GB team was DSQ because it didn't register, when she would have otherwise won the Gold medal.
However in general it was a very positive enhancement to the event experience.
These are rather contradictory statements. I'm not sure I would agree with the second if I was the victim of the first.

I'm unsure how having courses voided and losing a gold medal was a positive enhancement?

They can be the same units, but they have to be specifically programmed to be in touch-free mode. It should be publicised clearly if that is the case. The units at the event you were at on Sunday were not set up to be touch-free.
Why did I do that...

Frog
We will be setting our units for contactless punching at the Festive Frolic on Hogmanay so that everyone that Santa was good to can come and play with their new toy.

Will there be contactless dibbers for hire for those of us who Santa forgot?

Re: SIAC touch free
Sadly I'll miss the festive frolic again due to having too many relatives still living in England. They don't even have any o events near them to compensate.

Re: SIAC touch free
Given how careful orienteers are with their money, and their dislike of any increases to entry fees, I'm not sure if people are going to be happy paying £3 on top of a £6 entry fee for the privilege of touch free.
Part of the problem is that many clubs don't charge for the hire of an SI-card, so going from free to £3-4 is a significant change. It must be hard to explain to a newcomer that they need to hire a timing device, which is non-optional. I'm not aware of any running races or triathlons where the timing chip is an additional cost.

In this case there are normal dibbers free of charge. So the question is how much people are prepared to pay for the opportunity to have a go at SIAC, if only just to see what it is all about.

The cost is built into the entry fee - how you seen how much it costs to enter a triathlon?

Having recently paid £250 to enter Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire, I'm aware of the costs. But my point is that I can't compete without a timing chip so it's not an optional extra.
I think the issue is that currently you can't have mixed punching, but I can't find the bit in the rules that says so.

For whatever reason, runners in the UK have never taken to buying their own timing chips, in contrast to orienteers - and now there are so many different systems used in running races, some of which are disposable, that the situation is unlikely to change. By contrast, I believe that on the continent a fair number of runners did buy timing chips, and paid a lower entry fee as a result. A big difference is that the chips you use in races (and presumably triathlons) don't need to store anything - it's the infrastructure (timing mats etc) that provides the results. That makes them a lot cheaper than SI or Emit cards of any type - from memory, we paid a few pounds each for them a few years ago when I was involved in organising a race.

There is currently no rule disallowing it - although E&CC have made it clear that they would like this to be the case.
The Brighton City Race tomorrow will be run using mixed punching. Of the 175 entries:
38 own their own SIAC
66 have asked to "hire" one (there is no hire fee for this event)
71 have opted to use their own non-SIAC card
It's possible that a (large?) number of these 71 didn't realise that they could borrow a SIAC free of charge, or couldn't work out how to indicate this on their online entry. We still have 50 SIACs to lend out so I anticipate some late requests to change. If any Nopesport readers are one of those please can you try and do it using the Fabian4 amend entry function (just leave the SI-card field blank) today.
