Entries are open for the Grampian Mountain Challenge 2016, which this year is centred around Morven in the heart of Royal Deeside. It takes place during the weekend of 12th/13th November. The main event parking is in the village of Dinnet, with transport provided to take competitors to the start in the wonderful Cambus O’May, a fast but tricky area of intricate moraine at the foot of Morven. The race finishes near Dinnet meaning it should pass through the wonderful Muir of Dinnet area at the end of Day 2, a personal favourite of mine with more intricate moraine and classic Deeside forest too.
Overnight accommodation will be in a remote location, and as per previous GMC events you can pack your tent and sleeping bag into a separate bag for mid-camp and it will be transported there by the organisers. All you’ll need on the hill is a day pack with waterproofs and food etc… Mid-camp will also offer a hot meal after your run and the chance to buy beer and buy a hot breakfast the next morning. There will be a heated marquee too to socialise in.

So to summarise…
2 day mountain marathon using 2 scales per day (1:10000 standard orienteering map, and 1:40000 OS map for hill navigation) can you adjust to the change in scales each day?
Prizes in a variety of classes
Open to 16yr olds if accompanied in pairs by a responsible adult
Chance to run solo or in pairs (the event is not as extreme as Highlander or LAMM)
Overnight kit (1 bag each - sleeping bag/tent/warm clothing etc) transported to the mid-camp for you)
Heated marquee to socialise and shelter in during the evening
Event t-shirt as part of your race entry
So who's keen?

I can confirm the quality of the orienteering terrain on offer, but might question the use of "fast" as a description of Cambus O'May (unless you mean fast by Deeside standards...).

Re: Grampian Mountain Challenge - GMC 2016 (Morven)
This weekend sees the running of the biennial Grampian Mountain Challenge again. I was out at the weekend helping the planner and controller put out and check some of the hill controls for the event. We had allsorts of weathers, gusts around 40mph with frequent heavy snow and hail showers, even some warmer sunny spells, but it's looking like a great event in some pretty challenging terrain at times.
Amazing views of the Cairngorms and the Deeside valley await... last day for late entries is today, there are still some spaces available and very few solo competitors currently!

Having spent the past two days training there, I can confirm that the word 'fast' should never be used to describe this terrain However, I would agree with Big Jon that it is a superb area...

Nice and sunny both days as it turned out. A wee dusting of snow on the tops, and satisfyingly p*ssing down shortly before the start and after the finish. Thanks to all involved.

Glad you and James enjoyed yourselves. Looked a really competitive mix of families on the C.
I'll pass on your thanks to the organising/planning team as most of them won't see this.

Re: Grampian Mountain Challenge - GMC 2016 (Morven)
Another great GMC. The snow (above 500m) made higher level route choices quite a lot harder and slower, but the course lengths were pitched right and led to some great competition, especially on the C course.
Graeme and James were spectacularly "Naomi-ed". (Well done John for managing to keep up with her).
I ntoiced that there's a distinct lack of teams from MAROC in the entries. With all those fit people and top juniors in MAROC, why do hardly any of you enter this event? Too tough for you?!

I believe a lot of the MAROC juniors were out West this weekend (long weekend in Aberdeenshire) doing some intensive coaching instead of hacking about in their back gardens... I'm sure Big Jon will explain in due course.

Indeed. The Maroc Talent Squad are in Glen Affric for the long Weekend with BigJon. With the JIRCs, intensive training with TG, and a local event having taken place in Cambus/Muir of Dinnet recently, and 4 night races in the Deeside Night Cup coming up this winter we have many opportunities to enjoy the fabulous terrain. (There is also the Morven Hill race, the regular mid-winter night run up Morven on 21 Dec, and another headtorch race up Cnoc Dubh (the hill on the Cambu/MoD map) which Deeside Runners organise and many of Maroc take part in....)
(Good to see one past MAROC junior still enjoying success in his old back garden on the B course though. The wine was very nice thanks )

Ahh yes my first experience of control tagging for GMC 2010 was 5hrs in the snow without waterproof socks... they were right at the top of my Christmas wishlist and I've never been without since!

My only experience is with versions of Sealskinz. I've tried various thicknesses but the driest and warmest are the neoprene thick versions. They are great for winter trail running too, and cycling!
