Re: SOA Propose to Increase Membership Fee by 42%
It is proposed to increase the SOA membership fee by £1 per year for Seniors (ie. raised from £7 in 2016 to £8 in 2017). There remains No Charge for Junior membership.

Re: SOA Propose to Increase Membership Fee by 42%
And it is proposed to revive the SOA-only membership option:
"With BOF agreement we are proposing to mitigate the impact of increasing membership fees for many SOA members by introducing a Club + SOA only membership option. Local members who are not interested in travelling to British Championship events or JK’s can select this option and forgo the membership benefits of BOF but save money by not paying any BOF fees. The SOA has looked at the implications of this, particularly insurance and membership administration and believe that we can cover the cost of this option. We also believe that it will be more attractive to new members if we can offer a reduced joining fee."

and another £1.00 in 2018 to £9.00 and another £1.00 in 2019 to £10.00. ie an 42% increase.Freefall wrote:It is proposed to increase the SOA membership fee by £1 per year for Seniors (ie. raised from £7 in 2016 to £8 in 2017). There remains No Charge for Junior membership.
The increase in fees of £1.00 in 2017 would increase income by £1,061.00. The SOA accounts for 2015 show a balance of £175,739 (ie £165.64 per senior member), therefore why bother with such an increase.

Do the SOA have BOF agreement yet?Rosine wrote:And it is proposed to revive the SOA-only membership option:

You need to be certain for a vote on this, believe is not good enough.Rosine wrote:Local members who are not interested in travelling to British Championship events or JK’s can select this option and forgo the membership benefits of BOF but save money by not paying any BOF fees. In the same way would local members not interested in travelling to Scottish Orienteering League, Scottish Championships or Scottish 6 Days be able to select a club only option? Clubs could offer this option.
Why increase membership fees if the fee can be reduced?Rosine wrote:We also believe that it will be more attractive to new members if we can offer a reduced joining fee."

Re: SOA Propose to Increase Membership Fee by 42%
smf - If you look at Appendix B you will actually see that the SOA reserves will drop considerably over the next few years even with the modest increase of £1 per annum. There will also potentially be a decrease in spend for those who elect to take club and SOA membership only should this proceed. I suggest you get along to the AGM after the Scottish Champs and argue your case there....I publish the SOA AGM Booklet on behalf of the Board and we have carefully considered the different proposals.

smf - my maths doesn't appear to be the same as yours - please let me know how £7 to £8 amounts to a 42% increase?

Re: SOA Propose to Increase Membership Fee by 42%
smf - thank you for promoting the SOA AGM so well. The fees we are proposing for 2017 are still cheaper than they were 10 years ago (£9 for Seniors in 2007) that and kids are still free but these headlines would not have been so good.
What is more important is the change to the structure and organisation of the SOA including the requirement to appoint a Chief Operating Officer. Alas that means I will no longer be the Professional Officer but will move to the new role of Events Manager four days a week (with a day off to play golf etc.) My thanks go to the SOA Board for so much hands on help over the years - the new COO will take on some of these responsibilities from the end of May. We wish Stef the best of luck.

Re: SOA Propose to Increase Membership Fee by 42%
If SOA can cover insurance with just a £1 (in the first year) increase in fees can you please educate BO in how to do this.
You might need to consider / confirm the rules for who can join SOA. I anticipate quite a number from south of the border may wish to do so....

Over a 2 year period - not exactly a 42% increase in one go as your headline implies...
Anyway £10 is a ridiculously small fee to pay for membership - about 2 pints in a pub or half a meal out. Orienteering has always underpriced itself and thus has too little money to invest in developing the sport - more coaching, more maps, more events, more publicity etc.

There are some brief details about the new COO in the SOA AGM Booklet. I have requested that a formal announcement be made on the SOA website.

I love it when someone uses percentages because putting that actual monetary increase would reveal how petty their complaint is.

Yup, when a weekend away could cost you £100+ (entry fees, petrol, accommodation)
...
and the problem is £3 extra to join the SOA...
