Very Long O
I wasn't involved but know someone who was at the ESOC Long O. Going by the 1 km grid squares on the map the 20km course is actually 30km+. Is this a record?

I believe the distance was right just the scale was wrong, did you measure the red line?

Re: Very Long O
Andy - the straight line distance for the "20 km" was actually 32 km. Even if the scale was wrong a 1 km grid square is still 1 km. I transferred the map onto GIS and double checked against the OS map.
Try Pythagoras as well. I have the coordinates of Control 11 as 319511,664146 and Control 12 as 322019,666366. That works out as 3349 metres which is just what it is on the map.

Looks a good bit further than the "16 mile" Pentland Skyline race

Re: Very Long O
Great publicity opportunity - "tough orienteers run extra 10k over Scottish mountains without noticing" etc.

Re: Very Long O
Freefall Junior brought things to my attention as he had been out for some time and realised there was still a long way to go and thought something must be a bit untoward. If it is any consolation it is not the first time this has happened but usually an extra km or two have been added - not an extra 12 km.

Except there seems to have been a 100% retiral rate.

Aww oops. I was hoping to make it down to do this but a change of plans meant I spent the afternoon enjoying Balmoral instead

The 2014 LDMT Classic was 30.1 km straight line with 2025 m climb, and unusual in that Hector Haines won by 35 minutes over Rhys Finlay Robinson, but also in a time faster than the winners of the Medium and Short courses!

Oops indeed - makes the Irish event where the map scale was 1:15,000 not 1:10,000 look like a minor glitch!

How long after an event is a reasonable time to expect to have to deal with a complaint?

You finally getting around to answering my telegram about that ESOC event in 1975 where the course was 3 furlongs too short?
