I was using it as one specific example of a bigger issue. I think not talking the same language and being completely invisible, after how many years in the post?, is pretty important.

So..... of those 84% Xplorers who "indicated they have or would like to participate in orienteering events", how many are actually orienteering? It's rather suspicious that both categories have been lumped together. "Would like to" is somewhat meaningless - there's lots of things I've tried that I 'would like to' take further, with no real intention of doing so. Maybe it's a bit like being corporately 'passionate' perhaps?

No, it's nowhere near that much - the entirety of SportEngland's funding to British Orienteering for 2013-2017 is £2.3 million, of which Xplorer is just a part.

This totally misses the critically important link - that to attract Xplorer participants to orienteering events, the events have to be marketed to those participants, appeal to those participants, and follow on from Xplorer reasonably well. This is the responsibility of both British Orienteering and clubs, and I don't think it's gone particularly well. But it's absolutely not as simple as 'you've done Xplorer, so we'll see you at the Level C next week'.

Shame it isn't the Sport England target of success

SportEngland provide the funding. So the target of success is what matters to SportEngland. This funding cycle, what matters to SportEngland is participation, so participation is the key performance indicator. If we want development programmes that meet our own targets that don't happen to overlap with those of funding bodies, then orienteering will need to pay for it ourselves.

Daffy, I should use the symbol more often, I thought the use of "shame" and "silly thought" would be understood. I am well aware Sport England is a numbers game and high participation equals success, thanks to reading earlier threads on Nope concerning Sport England (and Board minutes). Hence, "it is a shame..."

However, Sport England's objective are:

Sport England is committed to helping people and communities across the country create sporting habits for life.

This means investing in organisations and projects that will get more people playing sport and creating opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.

You would hope getting someone hooked on orienteering enough to join a club, would be most likely to lead to a "sporting habit for life." Few other sports can sensibly claim this when you look at our active M/W 80s.
