Some really good articles about WOC and not just from the Scottish perspective. Well worth a read.
I've often thought that in UK, there seems to be little information shared with future organisers of the same event. We seem to brush under the carpet any slightly negative comments which we could pass on to inform and enhance. We are very good at reinventing the wheel.

Interesting reading Erk Borg's comments.... particularly on the support given to the media. Erik has been working at most WOC's & WC's for the last eternity so I guess his views are valid.
WOC 2015 can't claim to be the 'best ever' if there is a 20 minute break in the start list for the Long Final & claims that the sprint was dumbed down by the powers that be....

Then you should read the final report from the WOC team to the IOF. Maybe the IOF will send you a copy. Maybe they'll send me one.

At European and World events (I don't know about WREs since they don't have those in TrailO) the SEA sends a report after the event to the IOF. Who gets to see these in future years I don't know, but I know it has been an issue that they haven't always been as visible as they should be.
One interesting aspect of these reports is that they can provide criticisms / suggestions for improvements to the rules or their interpretation which came up during that event.

Re: Latest CompassSport magazine
I agree when I organised the JK relays I thought there might be an info pack or something. I contacted the person who'd done it the year before who sent me a very useful excel spreadsheet and some advice.
For the big events having webspace somewhere that organisers/ planners/ controllers of the larger events can add stuff to for future volunteers to browse might be handy.
I still have the JK 2012 event spreadsheet if anyone's interested, and the rescue plan. Colin did most of the rescue plan, I don't know if he copied it filling in the blanks or designed it from scratch.

Given what happened we should be extremely relieved a 20-minute break is all we suffered.
I saw the minibus in the ditch; had it gone off the other side of the track the passengers would have suffered a far longer delay before their next run.
All credit to them for trying to push it out (not a chance) before their run, and then having a longer than planned warm-up.

This year's BOC had a Dropbox folder full of useful information including major event organiser handbooks etc. As one of the controllers I had access to this as well as all the files (risk assessments, helper schedules etc) that the organisers were regularly adding. Thus such material does exist but may not be passed around very efficiently.

There is an annual Major Events Conference. Various presentations are given from the JK and British events of that year. I believe that information should be available, although maybe not as "readily" as it could be.

Agree... wouldn't want any harm to come to athletes on the way to the start.

Borg is spot on regarding the experience for those in the arena. The priorities for WOC are:
1/ TV
2/ Course quality
3/ Spectators
IOF made it clear from the start that there could be no compromise of anything higher on the list for the tiniest gain of anything lower down. Consequently, the TV coverage was superb, the courses a bit compromised, and the spectator experience was primarily "watch the TV coverage".

Agree....
It's always likely that some unexpected disaster will occur. It didn't feel like it at the time, but getting a contingency in place to limit the damage to a 20 minute delay, short enough to avoid protests, was one of the great triumphs of WOC.

As an orienteer it was exciting to see orienteering on TV, I saw my sister in the crowd !!
after a while though...
For a non-orienteer, which is really who the IOF are trying to reach, it would be interesting, useful even to find out what they made of it.
has anyone done any user testing ?
You know - sample of non-orienteers - watch the coverage
"did you understand what was going on? was it interesting ? was it exciting ? would you watch more ? do you fancy a go ? "
If you could run forever ......

Re: Latest CompassSport magazine
My supervisors (never orienteered before) watched the BBC ALBA coverage of the WOC Sprints. They thought it was very exciting and have new respect for the demands of orienteering. However, they struggled to follow what was going on a lot of the time due to the commentary not being in English and they thought the commentators didn't know what was going on either...

I think the sad thing is that I suspect (and chaps from Moray can correct me if I'm wrong) that if the local Elgin and Forres chaps turned on the telly to watch this thing that was going on in their back yard they wouldn't have understood the commentary either.
There were 3 lots of commentary weren't there? BBC Alba with bits by Lorna, venue commentary by the usual suspects and what was it, IOF Commentary by Clive and Hugh-Dan (who is the usual sporting commentator for BBC Alba - Shinty and Rugby), was it the latter one that you had to pay for?

I think it is well worth a watch - same pictures as the BBC Alba but with Clive and Hugh-Dan providing the words (all in English)

Excellent, thanks - it'll be fun hearing what Uisdean was making of it and interesting to hear him speak in such a foreign tongue!
