Agree that for experienced competitors silent starts are generally better. But I would hope that there is at least some explanation given to EOD novices - e.g. if the start kite is not immediately adjacent to the start line

There will be notices in the start lanes and the event details summarise the usual standard instructions (p11), including start kite being visible or at end of tapes. And if competitors ask questions or look uncertain, they will, of course, be helped out.

Very interesting how there's a late change in the info re. Water at the finish as it now states there is some available for emergency and on request! Probably to meet a legal minimum requirement.
Still don't see why it cannot be provided for everyone... Small events manage it, large foreign events manage it and at this event most people's cars and bags/drinks will be quite a distance away. Plus there's the entry fee which would have easily covered any expense. Ridiculous.

A silent start? Never experienced one of those before. Hope I don't get in trouble for blethering!

The PreO (classic TrailO) at Haverigg will of course be silent throughout. Even if you are on the Standard/Novice course you must stay quiet as the Elite is a selection event and you'll be on the same track.

One more question... it suggests that my courses 5, 6 and 7 will have very long control descriptions. Any thoughts on good solution for fitting them into description holder? I have a decent length description holder but not sure even it will cope.

You can always go "old school" - if it is on waterproof paper you just pin the bottom-end to your chest and you are sorted.

Another technique (which I showed a junior at the SCOA sprint champs at RAL) was to make a tiny hole at the bottom-end and feed your SI Card safety loop (if you wear one) through it. You then hold it in your SI Card hand and can keep a finger (or thumb) on the next control as well.

Impressive fields - presumably because of world champs.
e.g. top 15 men, middle race start time, name, world ranking position today.
A Swiss heavy podium seems quite likely.
