Hi
As the most recent posts I can find on GPS watch guidance are a couple of years old I thought I'd ask if anyone has some more recent guidance. We're looking for something that's straightforward to use and basically we can check distance and route and time on...to then be able to upload to routegadget or similar. Don't want to be spending the earth but equally want to make sure we would spend enough to make sure it's worth it.
Our family has never owned anything like this before so are complete novices on it...any advice gratefully received!

Re: GPS watch guidance
I have had a Garmin forerunner 610 for two years now - it was top of the range then, but am sure theres a newer model, not too cheap but i think you get what you pay for.
Easy to use, very accurate, and had no issues, charge lasts a few events - longer when not using satellites, and upload data via the Garmin website with lots of data analysis and upoload to Routegadget etc.

Agree with noom. Garmin 610 is cut above the 405 I had before. Worth the money and its a bit cheaper now.

I use a 110 (cheaper) and it does what you want, though loading to RG is/was a pain (or rather the manipulation of your course on it). The battery needs charging (usb) every 2 or 3 events.

Garmin Forerunner 10 works, is relatively cheap, and comes in a variety of colours
Junior#2 has one and uses it for routgeadget etc.

Re: GPS watch guidance
I've got the 10 and really like it - ultra simple to use with start/stop buttons and a usb connector. Other half has endless problems with his 410 - flaky connection with 'ant stick' and difficult to use bezel for menus etc. though admittedly it has more functions. F 10 reliably saves a track, and that's all I want really. I find it fiddly to fit a track onto RG if the map isn't geo-referenced, which many of them aren't, and if i've forgotten to switch the watch on at the start, and off at the finish, though extra track can be edited out of the gps file in a text editor. I usually just view the track and use it for ref when drawing it in manually.

Re: GPS watch guidance
I had numerous problems with downloading data from my Garmin 310XT which also uses Ant. I initially used Garmin Express but found that it would not get data from the watch if it could not talk to Garmin Connect on the internet, which was a severe restriction. Following advice on the web, I then tried installing the older Garmin Training Center software, which does not need access to the internet. That seemed to work better but was still not perfect. I then found 'ST Uploader for Garmin' on the Google Play store. Using an On-the-Go lead, I can now download data without recourse to a computer or the internet. I use ST Uploader to transfer the data to my phone, usually straight after the event. I can save this as a gpx or there are various other options to share it. I can then import the gpx into Google Tracks on my phone (or tablet) and the track appears coloured according to speed. If there is an internet connection it is overlaid on an aerial photo. This takes a matter of seconds to do. Handy for those post-O discussions in the pub! Usual disclaimer.usuallylast wrote:Other half has endless problems with his 410 - flaky connection with 'ant stick'

Re: GPS watch guidance
it is unfortunate DC Rainmaker never does any accuracy tests what it comes to recorded track, elevation profile and such. Like running out and back same trail and see how tracks match and same hill loop to see how profile match between loops and against good DEM.

Garmin 610 seems to be available at £129 until 14:00 today (23 Nov) on an Amazon 'Black Friday' deal -- unless they sell out earlier of course.

Re: GPS watch guidance
I bought a forerunner 310XT after my forerunner 205 got stolen. I agree that the ant agent thing is a pain although better now I just use Garmin Connect rather than the fiddly way you downloaded stuff a few months ago, and I should have just bought another 205 although they are now expensive as no longer made and I see on Ebay you can get a 310XT for £114.50 excluding chest strap.
If I had a forerunner 10 I'd miss having laps and the time/ distance alert, plus the 310XT can vibrate rather than beep. There's loads of stuff on it I don't use though.
