We need to buy another. Mainly for my student son. He's keen on a flashing singing dancing one but as I'm paying for it he would be!
Are they contactless? I remember doing no contact punching at the FVO relay in Perth but don't remember what made things non contact, whether it was the SI Card or the unit.
What do people recommend for a casual if gadget minded orienteer?
which SI Card?

Re: which SI Card?
I don't think the flashing ones are contactless, but could be wrong.
I traded up to SI 10 at the start of the year and it is very much faster than SI 5. Unless waking a unit up it can beep and register before being fully in the hole. The end is thinner than SI 5 so also squeezes in more easily past gripple wire.
I have heard the SI 11 flashers will not register another punch whilst flashing, so would not be suitable for micro-O - but I am willing to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable.

Re: which SI Card?
Frog, the cards used in Perth in January were SPORTident Active Cards or SIAC which you will see the elites using in the sprints at Race the Castles. I think that it is not the right time to buy one, even if you could, as there are very few events where the units will allow the contactless (30cm range) punching.
KP's reply is correct and although the flash can be shortened for micro-sprint I doubt many people will bother with this.
I recommended that Rocky buy a type 10 (very fast but non-flashing) when he asked me the same question. He did.

And then lost it on a squad weekend. If anyone ever finds 7181211 it would be great to be reunited.

....
I got the flash time shortened from the default which is about 7s to something like 3-4s. One of DEE's Si-wizard did it for me so I don't know the details. 3-4s means that micro-orienteering shouldn't be an issue, neither should 20m run-ins.
First time I used it was on a bright day and someone else punched a control beside me so I put the SI Card back in to re-dib. I then had to wait the 7s (and indeed I got 2 splits 7s apart at download.
Just as I leave the control I don't normally want to be studying my SI Card I normally want to be confirming direction for the next control and/or re-confirming that code was the correct one. Looking for the flash is IMO a distraction. I got one since there a few times when I have goen through a map exchange or last control when there are others around and thought ... hmm did I remember to punch ... or was that my beep I heard (respectively).

Thanks. he decided he really wanted a flashing one with an easy to remember number so I went for that in the hope it would encourage him to orienteer more, if not then I get a fancy flashy SI card!
