So what is the answer ?
My starter for 10.
Primary Requirements.
1. The British Championships weekend should be held between Mid May and Mid June, in order that it represents the climax of the domestic season.
2. The British Champinships weekend should be held as combined event for all classes.
3. The British Championships weekend should comprise a Classic distance race followed by a Relay competition.
4. The British Championships should be held only on areas that provide sufficient orienteering challenge ( woolly I know but perhaps some concrete definition around continuous square km of forest or technically challenging terrain can be defined). (this to disqualify areas like Cromer but a allow areas like Holme Fell)
5. Competition in Elite classess a selection requirement for international teams.
Spin offs.
If a region cannot meet the requirements of timing and terrain they will not be allocated the British Champs.
BEOC Middle will need to take place separately from Classic and Relay
suggest in conjunction with BEOC Sprint. on 'The British Short Distance Championships weekend'.

Also the potential issue of whingers not running elite due to the relays the next day... personally I'd be happy to see a combination of middle/relay and sprint/classic - since you can generally get a better middle race out of dodgy terrain than a classic race then it might also open it up to more suitable areas.
on the downside, the classic race still seems to be seen as 'the' championship so if that's not on the 'championship' weekend then it's maybe slightly diluted.
still, good suggestions from Kitch.

"Awwwwww but I have exams, BLUB, BLUB!!!!!"
Would you please put a sock in it!
Honestly! I have been there, done that, and it was not hard at all to combine exams and races. In fact it was a peice of p***! JWOC selection races were always in the few weeks before JWOC, in the middle of exams, and everyone made it there. The only race I missed through my uni exams and school exams was one that took place on the same day as a saturday exam - a race I could not physically run. The race was a selection for Euromeeting that year and I had a good chance of making the team, but it was not the only selection race, and I would have been picked if I had won the other races, so I got over it.
I have got absolutely no sympathy for the moaners that expect the other 99% of the orienteering population to revolve around them just because they cannot get organised enough to fit their revision around the other 46 hours of a weekend that they do not spend orienteering.

What's wrong with Cromer?.....apart from being north of the border
I think you have to make it the showpiece event for the sport in the country if it is really to work. I know more people who go to the JK than the BOC. Maybe that's becuase I don't know many people who are good enough to put in a good performance at BOC, so they don't go?
And that includes medals and maybe even cash prizes, as I'm pretty sure most other sports do for their British Champs.
Maybe...

ah, I'm glad I'm not the only one that found having exams wasn't that much of a barrier... in fact, I think my training and racing always went up during exam time since I didn't have any lectures to go to.
having said that, Newcastle never had exams on a Saturday or anything daft like that, and I suspect there may be a bit of a correlation between exams held on a Monday morning and my lower marks...

great totally agree with all the points
however spin offs we should allow regions to go across borders to stage a british championships i.e. EMOA staging day2 of the JK this year in the Lakes. There is plenty of top terrain in the UK to get a British Champs each year that would satisfy the elites down also a good geographical spread could happen for those who whinge that a race is too far to get to.
and the exam question dry your eyes life is about making important choices if orienteering is more important than your exams you race and don't moan. if exams are more important than orienteering then you race but bring your notes and revise in any spare time you have.
hopefully next year at Penhale will set a precedence a good technical sand dune area with all the classes together.Hopefully some good commentary and blazin sunshine.

I'm with Ed - unless the exam is on the day of the competition, orienteering and training is a posivitive relief. I orienteered the weekends between all my uni exams, A levels and GCSEs and it hasn't done me any harm so far! Okay, so I missed the BUSA social, but there's plenty more occasions to watch Lord Fred and Brooner get hideously off their faces...
Will? We've got proper fire now!

gotta say i agree too, exams never got in the way for me (and i did have saturday ones!) it was always really good to get out training after an exam was over. i also agree with the middle/relay and sprint/classic combo. theres no reason why 20s and 21s can't have the same ie both do the middle before the relay. the classic for elites could be a national event for others, that way encouraging everyone to have something good to run

Being knackered from running the classic will detract from relays. Why not have the relay first? (I know what you're suggesting is no different from now, but I don't see the logic). Also, very few relay teams comprise elites only, so for a worthwhile competition there would need to be worthwhile spectator races with BEOC.

spin off : the BEOC should be on terrain relevant for upcoming internationals. This should be achievable with a bit of planning.

Mince. Surely 'The British Short Distance Championships day'
One Primary Requirement you miss - there must be a sensible number of "must-do" classic races during the season. I think part of the
problem this year is people felt obliged/wanted to do JK, 0007, Holme Fell, EOC, WOC trial and WOC. Six 90 minute races is an awful lot to peak for already, before worrying about BEOC.
Theory is all very well - but it looks like BEOC next year is going to be with BOC and BRC at Penhale which breaks your first requirement (but seems reasonable nevertheless). Dont know where the Short race will fit in - maybe we should hold it with SOL1 on "a highly technical area near Aberfoyle".

i'm with the don't let exams be an excuse group. if they are on a saturday then fair enough, and if they are something reasonably important like your finals then maybe, but i never had a problem right from gcses to finals with not running.
as ed says your fitness usually goes up, and i like to do anything but revise! i had my alevel maths exam the day after the jwoc test race in the lakes in '99, i just stayed in a b&b and revised after the short race, so maximising my time.
and inverness is a piece of p*** to get to now, what with sleazy jet flying there.
if the sport is going to showcase its elites, they all need to be there, and the race should be watched by the public- much as the JK was.
