Mharky wrote that Russian competitors at this years WOC will have to pay their federation 1000 Euro and possibly the WOC entry as well.
Just to put this in perspective, NZ this year have to pay their entry, AND the plane fare over to Sweden (fain in excess of the Russian costs). Hence why their team is very weak, and basically made up of those living in Europe (a long way from their best team although they will have some good runners).
Every year when Australian JWOCers go over to compete, a similar amount is paid to Orienteering Australia. Sometimes some of this money is refunded, but not always. But this does not include the airfare, which is always self-funded and adds up to around 700 quid. Then there is the cost of travelling around for a bit longer.... Luckily, Orienteering Australia fund the WOC team, to quite a good level, but if you are living in Oz, this doesn't cover everything. As a result though, Wrold Cups in Germany will not be funded, and the World Cups in Denmark are funded minimally.
I don't know what it is like for other countries outside Europe, but I imagine similar, and probably closer to the NZ situation than their luckier Antipodean neighbours.
An annual WOC is killing orienteering outside Europe. Shame that.
So feel greatful most of you are British!

Not that most of us are concerned about WOC fees, since most of us have never had anyone contribute anything to the cost of our hobby, but
dont you mean "feel greatful you're living in Britain".

my flatmate is from New Zealand and she is running in WOC (plus JWOC and Danish 5 days) so I know how much they are having to pay.
This year the Swedes want 2400Kr as an entry fee for anyone running. There is also accomodation and food fees to pay aswell.
Last year in switzerland it cost about 1800krs worth, and Demark will cost the same 1500 Danish (about 1800 swedish)

same for most of the smaller countries - the Irish team have to pay quite a lot towards WOC as well (accom, flights, training etc...) But we are lucky that ryanair flights to Sweden aren't quite as expensive as flights from Oz or US. I guess it's not that long ago that the GB team didn't have that much funding either though - some of the older members of the team will surely have put a lot of money into it for quite a few years I imagine but recent levels of funding.
